The Art of It All

What have you learned about yourself or the world as a result of living through the COVID-19 pandemic? Your challenge is to express your experience of living through this historic time through a work of art.

Space Must Go On!

Summary

My work shows that despite harsh circumstances, isolation and numerous restrictions of many processes in the world, the space industry continued to develop, to some extent. By means of 3D picture, I wish to express my sincere belief, that such large-scale issues as space exploration and space-oriented projects will be carried out again, taking into account successful Dragon launch.

How I Addressed This Challenge

My project expresses my concern that, due to the pandemic, the launch and testing of some rockets have been suspended; some space missions have been postponed. And it demonstrates my confidence and joy that space exploration has not stopped - during these unprecedented times of the COVID-19 lockdown NASA and Space-X has successfully launched the manned spaceship Crew Dragon.

How I Developed This Project

I am 12 years old, and for 4 years I have been engaged in various projects about Space. I take part in competitions, NASA and ESA challenges, develop models of spacecraft. I have made three presentations at International Conferences and Symposia in Ukraine and Europe. The COVID-19 pandemic affected all spheres of life and had some psychological and social impacts on me. When, unfortunately, my visit in March 2020 to European Space Operations Centre in Darmstadt, Germany was postponed, I begun studying space agency’s open resources for the information about current space activities and learned that space industry and science did not pass by. Some current missile launches are already being canceled (Electron, Vega, Arian-6), the construction and testing of satellites has been put on hold (SLS, Orion, James Webb Space Telescope), some space missions were carried over (ExoMars, Mars-2020, Artemis), the operations of some European satellite missions were preventatively suspended (Cluster, Trace Gas Orbiter, Mars Express, Solar Orbiter), some companies stopped working (OneWeb, Bigelow Aerospace). The majority of the workforce of NASA and ESA remains with mandatory telework from home.

By using space agency data (pictures, text reports, etc.), Blender and Adobe Photoshop I have done the 3-D project and 2-D picture demonstrating that Space exploration has not stopped. This project may be animated in the nearest future.

The “Earth” in my picture at the same time is sad, putting off the launches of some rockets and James Webb telescope in a long box, pausing the work of some space missions and operational satellites, and is confidently looking to the future due to the successful manned Crew Dragon  launch.
