Food for Thought

Your challenge is to consider the journey of food to your plate, determine how disruptions from the COVID-19 pandemic are affecting the food supply locally and globally, and propose solutions to address these issues.

The Home Vegetable Garden

Summary

We want to find a way for everyone to have space and a cost-effective home vegetable garden so that they will not have to travel to the supermarket frequently and be exposed. In addition, the Home Vegetable Garden will make them engage at home in this hard time which can be psychologically beneficial. And they can use leisure time to save expenditure on vegetables. Our concept was to build a fully functional mobile App. The content present on the app is just a tool to present our concept.

How We Addressed This Challenge
  1. Create a Mobile App that can guide beginners to start gardening the vegetables at their home.
  2. The app will be processing Meteorological data to take care of the plant.
How We Developed This Project

Pandemic of Covid-19 has caused people to maintain social distance and this seems to last long for years. It has a huge impact on food production and supply chain so, we choose this challenge to address the problem.

We came with the idea to build a mobile app that will assist the beginner to start a home vegetable garden, to overcome the shortage of food supply locally and globally.

We used Meteorological data provided by CNES via API in our app to suggest the user with type of vegetable that can be grown based on the Vegetation and Climate of the region. And also, guide the user to take care of plants, based on the weather condition in a day.

We used https://thunkable.com/#/ to build a mobile app that can be supported by both android and ios.

We used the Regional chat group provided by the organizer to have a team.

We used google tools (doc, slide, hangouts) to discuss and share the ideas between team members.

Since we formed a team at the last moment after the competition has started we had a time constrain. Since every member of the team was unknown to each other's in the beginning, it was hard for us to know each capability to contribute to the project. So, it took us time to plan the project and make work division. Since every member of our team belongs to different countries with different time zone, we also have a problem with language accent and working schedule. Despite all these problems, we were able to come up with this project. It was also a good opportunity provided by the organizer to us the citizen of different countries to collaborate for a global challenge.

Data & Resources

We use the data provided by CNES for meteorological information through the following API on our app:
