Food for Thought

Your challenge is to consider the journey of food to your plate, determine how disruptions from the COVID-19 pandemic are affecting the food supply locally and globally, and propose solutions to address these issues.

Harvest-Time

Summary

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, quarantine has been generated worldwide, which has caused that several kinds of food (such as fruits and vegetables) are not on the table of many people. HarvesTime is a web application where by just choosing a specific region it is possible to know the kind of fruits and / or vegetables that can be grown on a season, and determined by the climate shown in that region (data obtained from NASA), as well as the correct way to grow them, with the purpose of strengthen food banks and promote urban agriculture to correct this need.

How We Addressed This Challenge

Upon entering the system, it will be possible to see a map where a certain region will be chosen (data obtained from NASA through API and CSV files). Then, the fruits and vegetables that can be harvested in that region will be shown, organized according to the weather, on a certain date that can be historical or current. Likewise, for each displayed fruit or vegetable, it is possible to access the detail of each one, where it will be shown the way it can be cultivated, through a brief explanation in text, images and links to related videos.

How We Developed This Project

The project was inspired on the fact that in most countries a problem related to COVID-19 was repeated. Many people were confined, with little or nothing to eat, and those essential fruits and vegetables could not be supplied due to the border closures, so we focused on creating an application to strengthen food banks and promote urban agriculture.

The project was developed under the Django framework, with the Model- view-template schema, the postgresql database. The NASA data is used through API and CSV files provided

Problems related to the challenge time arose, since it was supposed to be developed in 48 hours, but fortunately it could be completed on time, and the goal has been achieved through experience and research.
