Food for Thought

Your challenge is to consider the journey of food to your plate, determine how disruptions from the COVID-19 pandemic are affecting the food supply locally and globally, and propose solutions to address these issues.

Impacts on food due to COVID-19 •

Summary

• Many lives are at stake because of this pandemic. Vulnerable communities like small scale farmers, migrants, informal workers, pastorals, and fishers who are hindered from working in field, harvesting, and marketing their products or buy essential inputs. Unemployment rates are gradually rising. Developing & underdeveloped countries will have to struggle for optimum food demand. But if the price of food goes lower farmers and agricultural sector will be badly affected.

How We Addressed This Challenge

This challenge can be addressed if country eliminates existing export restrictions, including export taxes & export bans, reduce tariffs and taxes. Locally produced food crops can be marketed at the local level by following the safety precautions. Farmers won't be affected if developed nations make agro-products available at half the price ensuring that manufacturing companies should not bear loss. If we are able to maintain water supply we will not have to suffer for drought as Somalia did where more than 2 million people faced hunger between July to September 2019.

How We Developed This Project

Thought of "NO FOOD NO LIFE'' inspired us to take this challenge.
