Food for Thought

Your challenge is to consider the journey of food to your plate, determine how disruptions from the COVID-19 pandemic are affecting the food supply locally and globally, and propose solutions to address these issues.

COFEED-19 “Land security brings food security”

Summary

The project aims to take advantage of having access to plant lab satellite imagery per day for almost any area on the earth. By utilizing these data and processing it using a neural network algorithm, the application can develop a robust early alarm system that can provide its stakeholders with the best reliable statistics on the field of food security especially the actual crop yield production and its intended prediction. Moreover, the application would be able to classify each crop type.

How We Addressed This Challenge

By using remote sensing technology, the user can access the non-access area and retrieve the agricultural data such health of vegetation, yield production , area coverage on a daily basis. this application would ensure the sustainability of supplying the food for the user and also will play a crucial rule as an early alarm system to report on any decrease in production.

How We Developed This Project

The team was inspired due to the rapid demand for food during the lockdown which well stress the farms more in order to satisfy this demand. The general approach was to convert the satellite imagery ( raw data) into meaningful information that help the user to take immediate action as per the current situation. Due to the high spatial and temporal resolution of plant lab satellite imagery, the team decides to use it as the backbone of the input data . ArcGIS and ERDAS software were used as tools for image processing and retrieval and integrate information.
