Food for Thought

Your challenge is to consider the journey of food to your plate, determine how disruptions from the COVID-19 pandemic are affecting the food supply locally and globally, and propose solutions to address these issues.

Tá na Mesa

Summary

The Tá na Mesa project is a web platform integrated with a chatbot that interacts through mobile messaging applications. It aims to facilitate the connection between small growers and the final consumer by trying to mitigate interruptions in the food chain caused by COVID-19. Data democratization is yet another purpose of this project which embodies providing information (weather forecasts, adverse conditions, food security, etc.) in a simple way to instruct and give autonomy to the producer regarding its production.

How We Addressed This Challenge

The Tá na Mesa project is a web platform integrated with a chatbot that interacts through mobile messaging applications. It aims to facilitate the connection between small growers and the final consumer by trying to mitigate interruptions in the food chain caused by COVID-19. Data democratization is yet another purpose of this project which embodies providing information (weather forecasts, adverse conditions, food security, etc.) in a simple way to instruct and give autonomy to the producer regarding its production.

How We Developed This Project

Our chatbot creates an interface between people and space agency data, bringing relevant data to the small farmer in a simple and known way with existing mobile messaging apps. We compile weather forecast data, historical soil analysis, food security recommendations and COVID-19 preventions.

Our developing approach was separated into two main applications, one of them the chatbot, responsible for interacting with the user and collecting the demands and the other, the server that receives these demands and connects to the satellite data, as Weather  APIs and generates reports with information in a simple way and return to the user. We use Nest.js Framework to setup a node server and connections with EC2 Nasa databases

The principal challenge that we faced was how to democratize data. The data prepares and analysis to be compiled in a simple and accessible text for farmers must always be updated. Other challenge is how people will access all this info, this is why the chosen interface is via existing messaging apps.
