Food for Thought

Your challenge is to consider the journey of food to your plate, determine how disruptions from the COVID-19 pandemic are affecting the food supply locally and globally, and propose solutions to address these issues.

Gardens in quarantine

Summary

We know that with the pandemic, social isolation and rising prices, people are unable to purchase condiments, vegetables and fresh medicinal herbs. Our project is to reduce these problems, in addition to serving as a hobby. With that in mind, we created a website where people can access information to create a small vegetable garden, which can be done even in apartments. On this site, species suitable for planting in South America are proposed, based on the analysis of the morphoclimatic profile of each of the hotspots. Thus, we hope that this pandemic has a positive legacy, the gardens.

How We Addressed This Challenge

The challenge addresses the pandemic that affects local food supplies and concerns about the risk of disruptions in supply chains and logistics that can affect food security in a region or in the world. In this sense, we observed a problem, the difficulty of obtaining vegetables, spices, herbs is similar to the fresh one. In view of this, thanks to the need for social isolation and price increases. In addition, through the analysis of EOSDIS data, it is shown that the majority of virus hotspots are in areas of high urbanization and population density. Our project was developed to reduce these problems. The idea of
the project is to create an informative website, where you will have, step by step, how to create a small vegetable garden in your house or apartment with species easily accessible locally and selected according to the morphoclimatic profiles of each region also determined by EOSDIS data. . Reducing the need to leave the house to buy some medicines or vegetables, favoring the maintenance of social isolation and soon helping to reduce the spread of the virus. In addition, it would be a great activity for those who have little entertainment, as gardening is very relaxing and helps to have an occupation during this period. In addition, this garden does not need to end in the pandemic, it is a legacy that can improve the quality of life of these individuals and families in the long run

How We Developed This Project

We think mostly of people who live in urban centers, because the places with the highest population concentration are the places with the highest level of infectivity. To complete this task we try to imagine a way to reduce the level of contagion on the surface of the food, taking into account that many people are not taking proper care of the food mainly during the line of cultivation and trade. We use the data from the space agency as a research source to build our morphoclimatic profiles in order to establish the list of vegetables, condiments and medicinal herbs within easy reach that would be suitable for cultivation according to the climatic condition of each place (the 6 main HotsPosts Covid-19). We use the hangouts meet tool so that we can get together and discuss the work; we use the google sites platform to create our site with all the information about our project; We used data from EOSDIS, NASA, for and other morphoclimate analysis; we use South American botanical sites to research plants. We were all inexperienced in map analysis and botany, and this project was a challenge and an opportunity to learn more about and further develop one of the team's skills.
