Food for Thought

Your challenge is to consider the journey of food to your plate, determine how disruptions from the COVID-19 pandemic are affecting the food supply locally and globally, and propose solutions to address these issues.

Corona In Plants No More

Summary

The COVID-19 pandemic has certainly changed people's lives. Some may say they prefer working from home however this change in lifestyle has greatly affected the agricultural industry. The project is a full interconnected system that sanitizes the crops, provides irrigation and then fully transports the crops across a conveyer belt where they get sanitized and then placed in tightly sealed bags with an extra sanitization upon the pulling of the wire attached to the bag which ensures safety.

How We Addressed This Challenge

Due to the corona virus pandemic a huge amount of workers are loosing their jobs. However, it has been known that due to this pandemic as well that we need to social distance in order to limit the number of infected people. This project ensures that both are satisfied in which even though workers are social distancing they're also doing their job but from afar.

The project ensures the safety of the crops that are being delivered to the customer regardless of their location. The entire system consists of different components that work together in order to ensure that the plants are safe and hopefully corona virus free. Workers can monitor the crops from an application that shows the conditions of the plants regardless of the location and if there were human contact to be needed the worker has to make use of the suit which fully sanitizes the farmer before entering the crop filled farm.

How We Developed This Project

The core of keeping human race is agriculture which means that everything depends on it. As a result we chose this challenge to solve the problems that face our sources of food (farms) due to COVID-19. The first problem was how to protect the crops from getting the virus.  The second problem was the decrease of the number of farmers.

As a solution, more technology was used instead of humans by that the number of needed farmers will also decease. In addition, the usage of a number of devices and techniques was used in order to make sure that there will be no direct contact between the framers and crops. Finally, it's crucial to note that the fruits and vegetables going to be pre-pack before they reach the stores.

The main aim of this project was to develop a cost-effective project that will be able to serve the farmers in which this COVID-19 pandemic will hopefully not last for a very long time in which this project can also be used for post pandemic in order to ensure the safety. The entire process works as follows in which initially all the crops  will be monitor by the different conditions of the crops such as temperuter and humidity. Also, there is an timer irrigation system ensure that plants get the correct irrigation and  are safe. The farm system also has surveillance cameras which ensure that if there was a measure of toxicity or anything it will be reported to the farmers by a message. The system is also equipped with sanitizing equipment that regularly sanitize the crops within a certain time period repeating twice or three times. If the needs requires farmers to come a suit is to be worn in which it contains the sanitizer that sanitizes the farmer for safe crops.

The scissors are also equipped with a sanitizing solution in order to cut the crops. The conveyer belt was used in order to help simplify the process and  to ensure that the crops undergo full sanitization. After that the crops are placed in a tightly sealed bag that also has another round of sanitization which is done when the crops are delivered all the customer has to do is pull the wire in order to sanitize the crops.

The project was developed since not all countries have the same services provided to them. However, it's important to consider that safety comes before everything therefore a factor that played a huge role in our project was safety. Some problems that we faced was the ability to create a cost effective project due to the fact that some materials that were to be used were somewhat lengthy but in the end, the final project was designed to ensure safety and the cost ensures that the project is safe.

The usage of Arduino was used in order to help develop the code in which the code mainly focuses on measuring temperature, humidity and even alerts a certain phone number about the conditions of the farm in order to ensure that farmers have access to the farm conditions whenever. A GSM was connected to the device in order to alert the receiving end and it was required to make use of Transmitters and Receivers which are basic components of Data Communication systems.

In the end, we can say that the team was able to successfully design the project which met the requirements of the Space Apps challenge however it's safe to say that the project still requires more studying due to the limited amount of time that was given.Safe agriculture is a key to a safe world.
