Food for Thought

Your challenge is to consider the journey of food to your plate, determine how disruptions from the COVID-19 pandemic are affecting the food supply locally and globally, and propose solutions to address these issues.

TrACE.AI (Traceability Access to Customer Export powered by Artificial Intelligence

Summary

The current COVID-19 situation has prevented fishermen to sell their catch to the market and reach out to the export market. Our proposed mobile app will create a market place for fishers to sell their catch to the registered buyers and still comply with the traceability and documentation for the supply chain. The fisherman will still register the catch into the e-documentation system linked to the local fisheries management office to be able to participate in the mobile marketplace.

How We Addressed This Challenge

The COVID-19 pandemic has a direct effect on the proposed mobile app development as it addresses the problem of the fishers in how they can sell their goods locally. The mobile app will create a marketplace for agriculture and fishing communities to get a fair value of their catch and also correctly document their activities for better management and sustainability. In this situation, we need to guard and implement proper documentation of the food supply chain to avoid shortages, oversupply, and overpricing. Electronic documentation and traceability need to be adopted and implemented to minimize human-to-human contact. We will integrate worldview data tool from NASA's Earth Observing System Data and Information System (EOSDIS) will be utilized to validate fishing ground locations. Google Earth is then used to document the delivery for seamless traceability.

How We Developed This Project

In this Pandemic situation, food is the number one concern of everybody. But people are limited to interact with one another, do their jobs, and earn their living so we need to protect the food supply chain. This includes the seafood supply chain. Documentation and traceability are required to fishers especially on areas that need to be protected. How do we keep the seafood supply chain sustainable? We need to utilize mobile devices and put them smarts to be able to trace the catch to the plate seamlessly.

We use the following online tools for the design of the mobile app;

For the mobile app development;

Java
Machine learning

Python

We also integrated worldview data tool from NASA's Earth Observing System Data and Information System (EOSDIS) will be utilized to validate fishing ground locations. Google Earth is then used to document the delivery for seamless traceability.

Our greatest achievement in this NASA Space App challenge was coming up with an all-women team and providing a solution for the food supply chain.
