Human Factors

The emergence and spread of infectious diseases, like COVID-19, are on the rise. Can you identify patterns between population density and COVID-19 cases and identify factors that could help predict hotspots of disease spread?

The Correlation Between Population Density and COVID19 Cases in UK Counties and PPE developments

Summary

This project will divide the UK counties and compare the infection and death rate with Covid-19 cases to determine a correlation with population density. Following this we will then apply scientific knowledge to determine how counties with a higher population density may have been able to reduce the rate of infection and suggest ideas and ways to predict the hotspots of diseases, like Covid-19, and prevent the spread of such contagious diseases.

How I Addressed This Challenge

Our project address' this challenge by identifying the patterns between population density and COVID 19 cases as well as developing on ideas that may be able to predict hotspots in local communities where the disease could be more likely to spread. As well as this we will also address the issues with current PPE and other modification which could be made, as well as ways that these products can be sold or distributed for use.

How I Developed This Project

Our team was inspired by local communities pulling together in such difficult time in order to support each other.  One example is a small naval community in Cornwall called Torpoint. This town rallied together in order to support vulnerable neighbors and those who have been self-isolating by delivering shopping and other essentials people may need to get through this difficult time. If in turn we could develop a way to identify the transmission hotspots we may also be able to suggest possible steps to take and personal protective equipment developments which can aid this generosity and reduce the transmission rate of the virus.
