Human Factors

The emergence and spread of infectious diseases, like COVID-19, are on the rise. Can you identify patterns between population density and COVID-19 cases and identify factors that could help predict hotspots of disease spread?

Hazard Map for Coronavirus cases

Summary

Our challenge is to identify factors that helps to predict critical COVID-19 spread spots considering population density and preview cases. For such, we came up with a key-task: does human interaction with the environtment affects COVID-19's spread? Using NASA data along with World Air Pollution data we could identify areas with more, less or no cases at all, as well as areas that can probably become risky. This way, we'll be able not just to predict critical areas but also avoid new pandemics.

How We Addressed This Challenge

Our project has as intention to research, unit and spread information about coronavirus that affects directly humam population. Uniting satellite datas on populational density, age pyramid and air pollution plus environmental and health organizations data we could show the impact of the virus on population along with prevention methods. Besides that, we could predict risk areas (organized by intensity). Our website was developed in a simple way so everyone can access and understand its informations, which can also be used in the future to help not only predict hotspots for the disease, but also prevent new pandemics like this one.

How We Developed This Project

Our greatest inspiration was to help people, to be able to actually work on something that may help people now and in the future. We  decided to create something informative that is easy to interact with, so we came up with the idea of an website where people can find information like the spread of COVID-19, symptoms, tips, useful links and mental health. We used space agency data to have information on populational density, age pyramids and air pollution. We used sattelites mostly. We had some communication issues because of internet connection but we were able to work well together and we found out that we need each and every member of the team in this.
