Human Factors

The emergence and spread of infectious diseases, like COVID-19, are on the rise. Can you identify patterns between population density and COVID-19 cases and identify factors that could help predict hotspots of disease spread?

Summary

Huge crowds at essential service locations can be a major problem during quarantine periods. The solution found by the team is a platform that helps people make responsible and safe exits to essential service locations with the use of Google's resources, where the user can log in to pin the establishments they frequent most, consult the traffic at that location and even plan their departures in advance according to the schedule suggested by the platform, also being useful for unexpected situatio

How We Addressed This Challenge

The “Human Factors” challenge invited us to identify patterns between population density and COVID-19 cases with an emphasis on human activity to find solutions that help to predict and avoid hotspots of disease spread. Researching the resources made available by NASA and partner satellite observation agencies of Earth's infrastructure, we identified that contagion can increase a lot with a higher density of people in a building, the so-called agglomerations, in which the chance of an infected person contaminating healthy others it's too high. Situations like this can be avoided with the practice of social isolation. However, even in places that are under quarantine, establishments that are considered essential services do not close, as they guarantee basic human needs. The problem lies in the fact that agglomerations in these places are responsible for much of the contamination that occurs during the quarantine period and also because they are activities that cannot be left out. Considering this problem, the team tried to find an innovative solution that could help the population to avoid agglomerations in essential places during quarantine and thus avoid future critical points.

How We Developed This Project

What inspired us to develop this project was the perception of the scope of the problem encountered, taking into account that it affects the vast majority of people, who cannot fail to attend banks, markets and pharmacies. All of them are vulnerable to the agglomeration factor that increases contagion. We had trouble finding tools that could make the idea we proposed viable. We went through several versions of the project until we decided to use pre-existing Google resources in a combined way and giving a new perspective to data already collected. It is the sum of several tools that are put together in an innovative way to help in this new pandemic scenario.
