Human Factors

The emergence and spread of infectious diseases, like COVID-19, are on the rise. Can you identify patterns between population density and COVID-19 cases and identify factors that could help predict hotspots of disease spread?

CoAct

Summary

CoAct: A community crisis application that aims to enable people to proactively respond to the Covid-19 threat that we face today. CoAct involves the collection of critical data that will enable our users to make informed decisions, as well as model predictive patterns.

How We Addressed This Challenge

Through the rise of this worldwide pandemic, countries have all varied in their response to Covid-19 .  Through periods of lockdown and social isolation, jobs have been lost and people's lives have been hugely impacted, especially those who live paycheque to paycheque.  Through all the efforts, citizen’s of the western cape have expressed that they still feel like there is not enough information to make responsible decisions about their activities.  Despite the Western Cape’s best efforts to prepare for the inevitable infection flair up as lockdown eases. Western Cape citizen’s do not feel adequately prepared.  If those demand socially fortune are struggling with access to relevant and real-time data, those underprivileged and less fortunate are less likely to be able to access information.

This lead to the decision to mobilise those we can reach and enable and empower them to make a difference to those who can't.

All for one, one for all!

How We Developed This Project

The team faced challenges with source data in relation to this problem statement.  Through hours of reassessing human activities and factors , we realised that empirical evidence is not widely shared.  This gap in data allowed for us to focus in on capturing data that would complement that which is shared more broadly.

The team came to the conclusion that we would aggregate the WHO data source, as well as the the population density data of the Western Cape province, observed with NASA’s Worldview.
