Human Factors

The emergence and spread of infectious diseases, like COVID-19, are on the rise. Can you identify patterns between population density and COVID-19 cases and identify factors that could help predict hotspots of disease spread?

Safly - Risk Assessment App

Summary

Our project consists of an app that gathers and analyses information about COVID-19 cases in each neighborhood of a city by using data provided by the local government. The information feeds an algorithm that generates a risk assessment score for each sector based on the intensity and stage of the pandemic there and displays the results in a user-friendly way. Our goal is to share current, relevant information, in order to help people stay informed and aware of the situation.

How We Addressed This Challenge

Based on the challenge of analyzing and addressing solutions to the human factors which potentialize the spread of COVID-19. We found out, correlating information gathered from different sources, that neighborhoods with higher population density were the ones with a higher percentage of cases. This project is expected to convey this information easily to the population, trying to inform them about the risks that intense levels of human contact (promoted by the population densities) has during this period. The software also can inform people about the situation in each part of the city, diminishing the number of people who will go to that region unnecessarily, while it is not safe.

How We Developed This Project

Through collectively analyzing NASA’s space data and reviewing the challenge, we came up with a solution that seeks to facilitate access to information and help people make more informed decisions.  We went through a brainstorming process to determine which features and layout we wanted for our app, deciding on keeping the information simple and direct to keep the app as user friendly as possible. We researched the necessary data, adjusted the algorithm, designed the logo and branding, and planned other app features, talking regularly in checkpoints, every three hours, to compare our work and set new deadlines and objectives. We reserved most of the second day to adjust the details, reviewing the design, and preparing the presentation.
