Human Factors

The emergence and spread of infectious diseases, like COVID-19, are on the rise. Can you identify patterns between population density and COVID-19 cases and identify factors that could help predict hotspots of disease spread?

Liway

Summary

Liway, a Filipino term for immune, is a website that tracks the proliferation of COVID-19 cases along with possible factors that might be correlated with the spread of the disease. Initially, these factors theoretically affect the respiratory or immune system which plays a huge role in contracting the disease. The correlation could predict areas that could potentially become hotspots for disease spread, thus giving them enough time to heighten community preparation and support.

How We Addressed This Challenge

The global situation regarding the coronavirus pandemic has barely shown signs of ceasing anytime soon. Countries are still struggling to “flatten the curve” and to keep cases under control. A key reason for this may be the lack of understanding and proper knowledge on the disease which leads to insufficient preparation in order to minimize the risk of contracting it. That is why Liway aims to present information as simple and as understandable as possible based on various data regarding the spread of COVID-19 as well as factors that contribute to it namely:

  • weather patterns
  • presence of allergens
  • air pollution
  • temperature changes

The correlation behind these factors aims to boost preventive measures and to possibly determine which places are deemed more susceptible to an onset of transmission of the disease.

How We Developed This Project

Covid-19 is a developing virus affecting many countries around the world. Who-man chose the challenge in the hopes of supporting communities and organizations in decreasing the spread of the virus by analyzing human factors and behaviors that catalyze the transmission of the disease. In considering the challenge, there were a lot of options to focus on but from further discussion and delving on the possible significant similarities and/or differences with the trends of the transmission from different countries, sources of information have been considered heavily in developing this project.

Using tools such as NASA worldview, Earthdata, Neustar, and COVID-19 Trackers, Who-man envisions a website that provides real-time updates on Covid-19 cases, a prediction of areas with a high possibility of becoming a hotspot to an onset of disease spread, and a simplified guide on disease prevention and safe practices.

Our team initially wanted to focus on the Philippines because we wanted to show and emphasize how much the virus is affecting our country. However, there was not enough data about it and it lacked demographics, making it too vague to be used as a basis. Because of this, choosing what to focus on was the most difficult part of the whole process since that helps jump-start the entire project, and there were a lot of options to choose from. Our team also lacks experience especially in coding so we had to scratch out making a mobile application which limited our options. Despite this, our team was still able to come up with Liway, aiming to help flatten out the curve and to triumph over the COVID19 pandemic.
