An Integrated Assessment

Your challenge is to integrate various Earth Observation-derived features with available socio-economic data in order to discover or enhance our understanding of COVID-19 impacts.

Cross Vegetation

Summary

We chose deforestation as the focus, because it compromises the balance of the planet in its various elements and ecosystems, affecting the economy and society, bringing several impacts such as the increase in the spread of diseases. Based on this theme and aligning the coronavirus pandemic, our innovative and non-existent solution on the market is the use of a tool that relates comparatives on continents showing regions among the most deforested continents that may suffer from possible future pandemics, analyzing forecasts based on past data and projecting future scenarios. We believe that our idea has the potential to continue in this hackathon.

How We Addressed This Challenge

The approach was carried out through contacts with specialists such as: Márcia de Forest Development, Arthur who is a Veterinarian, Peter of Futurism, Christian of Data Science, Gláucia medical and Priscila of Bioenergy, and also from data collected at NASA, Terminal Boomberg, UN, INPE and ESA / Copernicus. To develop a solution we decided to use the satellite data provided by NASA.

How We Developed This Project

The team chose the topic because it is controversial, little talked about and which is very important. Deforestation is a sad reality in which we are living and which causes many impacts on the ecosystem.

To develop a solution, we decided to use the python programming language together with the OpenCV framework to assist us in pre-processing the images we are going to capture from NASA satellites. This generated data will be stored in an Oracle Database Management System, and later will be extracted and displayed using back end and front end technologies. We are faced with a lack of data on deforestation and experts also did not know where to find them and whether they actually exist. We have a good synergy where everyone brought the best of themselves to architect a solution from scratch in just 48 hours!

With this project we aim to contribute to the decrease in cases of covid-19 and to have predictive capacity for future pandemics by reducing deforestation in the world and using data to simulate such scenarios, since there is already scientific evidence on the appearance of diseases in due to deforestation.
