Summary

The project aims to enable companies with more resources to help those who are in a situation of social vulnerability in fighting the consequences of the global pandemic of COVID-19. In addition, it helps to solve another problem: social inequality and helps businesses to leverage the economy.

How We Addressed This Challenge

On the challenge proposal, the objective is to integrate resources from Earth Observation with socioeconomic data to improve understanding of the impacts of COVID-19. Our proposal seeks to collect these socioeconomic data released by NASA and create a system to be used by the government's scoring companies in which, the more social actions performed, the higher your score. In the end, whoever gets the highest score will get benefits in a number of situations, such as priority in bidding, tax incentives, among others that can be added. Thus, the data obtained will serve to help reduce the impacts of the pandemic on people with disadvantaged economic and social conditions.

How We Developed This Project

By relating NASA's socioeconomic data on the population and the incidence of cases and deaths with data from Johns Hopkins University and data on the unemployment rate and government investments in the USA, taken from Fortune magazine, we note that despite efforts many people would be economically affected by the pandemic.

We thought, then, of a way to make companies with a high profit value help some people with economic and social vulnerability. To encourage, we created a platform that can be accessed by companies and the government where they register their projects and, depending on the level of the project, it receives a score that can benefit a company.
