The Isolation Solution

Social distancing policies enacted the world over during the COVID-19 pandemic have left many people socially isolated. Your challenge is to develop innovative solutions to combat social isolation.

B Keeper App

Summary

B Keeper App is a game created to connect isolated people with their families and beloved ones to help them to socialize even at distance using challenges that must be fulfilled together, such as cooking or learning something new.According to Dr. Tom Williams, from NASA's Human Research Program, "(...) when you're isolated (...) it also challenges our ability to self-regulate because we typically learn to respond to our environment by the manner in which other people may react to us.".So we created an app that allows diferent interactions that contributes to socialization even in isolation.

How We Addressed This Challenge

Our project is focused on the challenge The Isolation Solution. Through independent research and using data available at NASA's HRP, we identified that the isolated population misses family events and how the isolation brings up the need to remain engaged in some activity, respectively. Bringing this data together, we created a gamified platform that helps the isolated ones to interact with other family members and friends facing challenges and connecting by increasing ties. That helps us in socio-environmental adaptation that is impaired in a social distancing.

How We Developed This Project

Initially, independent research was carried out to assess whether if what we considered a problem was a general issue of the population. Our survey of more than 800 people supported our thesis. You can also check this data: https://1drv.ms/b/s!AtLdXj8mNKvjbHR3gSANIIQpdNI?e=WeyeMP

We subsequently identified which solution would be suitable, and we carried out a second independent survey where we identified that more than 80% of the population would like to have a solution like the proposed one. More data here: https://1drv.ms/b/s!AtLdXj8mNKvja74wKzAJbbUFU2A?e=tDMYfx 

We linked the collected data with the available one related to social isolation at NASA's HRP and concatenate to improve the tool created.

We presented the prototype to sample of 15 people, aged between 15 and 60 years old and the approval was 95%.
