The Isolation Solution

Social distancing policies enacted the world over during the COVID-19 pandemic have left many people socially isolated. Your challenge is to develop innovative solutions to combat social isolation.

Summary

Considering the negative emotions that social confinement can generate, from anxiety to suicide, our challenge was based on developing innovative solutions to transform people's lives during isolation. Ada, our assistant created to guide the conversation within the developed application, BudBot, based on scientific and behavioral data including data from NASA and JAXA, to help the user understand the situation he faces and direct him in the best way possible. When mental health is good within a society, this is reflected in good results in all other areas and the opposite is also true, so minimizing the consequences of isolation is crucial for a good recovery in any country.

How We Addressed This Challenge

Our project fits within the solutions for challenge 10: The isolation solution, as it eases the user's interpersonal emotional distance, provides various activities to identify the real situation of each user, and provides basic solutions so that it can be conducted to improve their emotional conditions, and in more critical cases refer to psychologists in very critical cases. These actions will be taken according to each user's response, using the Nasa database and the Egogram as scientific parameters to identify negative emotional states and change them according to the need identified by the AI.

How We Developed This Project

When we saw lots of news about the quarantine, we thought that emotional conditions would be greatly affected during this period and so we decide to create a solution to this problem. We used a behavioral and scientific approach as parameters for the development of our prototype. The data used to develop our project were: the Egogram, behavioral papers (NASA), personal care guide (NASA) and the Jung archetypes to help people who apparently are dealing poorly with isolation. We also use information about the universe and astronomy curiosities using data from the space agencies.

The project was developed with the Dialogflow platform, where parameters, words, and actions were introduced, creating an AI prototype, that was tested, revised and trained, using the Telegram (Message App), in order to learn and improve the dialogue with users and humanize the AI to identify emotions. The logic of actions and activities was developed by the entire group with the support of the mentors, after dividing the group into two parts with 3 people programing and 2 people developing the business plan.

The biggest difficulties encountered were learning how to use the Dialogflow tool in a single weekend and developing a usable prototype to survey the product's acceptance data within the market. Programing phrases for the AI to differentiate each feeling in the way we desired was also proved a challenge. The achievement of the group was to build an AI, complex enough to make a prototype capable of having a fluent communication and establishing positive feedback with the user.
