Because of the pandemic, social isolation became necessary. But how social isolation impacts vulnerable families that already were isolated from the basics? Our project has the proposition to reach families that were intensely affected by social isolation, assisting people to access the basics, like food, protection and socio economic reintegration, overcoming the barrier of non identification and access to needy communities, preventing the acceleration of contamination by Covid-19, as well a the acceleration of poverty rates.
The Corona Virus global spread generated a great collective commotion and motivated a lot of people to share their resources, time and connections to help people in vulnerable situation, which generated in us the desire to systematize these aid efforts and create support to local communities by monitoring and measuring its impacts.
We were inspired by the impact and change that this kind of project can do for thousands of families and reverse a long-standing profound socio-economic problem. One of our members has worked on humanitarian projects in communities in vulnerable situations around the world, such as tribes, villages, slums and refugee camps for over 10 years and also is the founder of a network called IMPACTO that focuses on transforming philanthropic institutions into impact driven social businesses. Today she has redirected her efforts and has been leading a campaign, AÇÃO IMPACTO Covid-19, of humanitarian aid in Brazil to prevent Covid-19 in Rio de Janeiro's favelas, closely monitoring the impact that the pandemic is generating in more needy areas and reversing challenges into solutions. Our proposal is to multiply the effects of the campaign and cause a significant change in the reality of these families, creating a system that multiplies the impacts. As a first step, we collect information from research and actions already developed and implemented by IMPACTO, in order to scale solutions. From that we investigate the real pain of these people: not being seen or recognized by society, as many of them are not registered in any governmental system and for the most part, authorities don't even know about their existence. So we reflected: how might we find solutions to put these families on the map so that they can be seen, recognized and have access to support campaigns, attention from public authorities and manage to bridge and distribute more benefits for the community? Based on this question, we thought about ways to map out these families and develop a platform to provide geolocalization and true ground data to be consulted and updated constantly, becoming a faithful source of information and true picture of where and how these vulnerable families are distributed. To ideate the proposed platform we used the Bayesian spatial interpolation method demonstrated in the research “West Africa Coastal Vulnerability Mapping: Demographic and Health Survey Data Sets” to serve as the basis to our method implementation, capturing demographic and geographic data to be used later on as a way to classify these communities in the planned mapping. The study “Global One-Eighth Degree Population Base Year and Projection Grids Based on the SSPs” helped the team visualize the socio demographic change of the last 10 years and to forecast the next decades, together with the WorldPop Demographics platform. To raise funds for these families during and after the pandemic, assuming that this project is continuous, we decided to invest in blockchain technology tools and infrastructure, ensuring transparency and efficiency to the entire operation. In the end, we put these three factors together: mapping technology, registration of vulnerable families through NGOs and blockchain technology. The team is extremely motivated throughout the process, because we are certain that we will be able to help thousands of families go through this pandemic moment in a more fair and protected way, growing exponentially.
