The Isolation Solution

Social distancing policies enacted the world over during the COVID-19 pandemic have left many people socially isolated. Your challenge is to develop innovative solutions to combat social isolation.

ISOLATION-COMBINATION OF MENTAL AND PHYSICAL CHALLENGES

Summary

If we look very carefully, within the word SOCIALIZATION lies the word ISOLATION.For some professionals, such as astronauts, oceanographers, cryospheric researchers etc social distancing is a normal practice, but for countless people, the concept of isolation is a new and challenging experience.NASA astronauts call this as “Expeditionary Behavior". This project addresses the challenge of how the entire world can show a “good EB" and also suggests solutions for the same.

How I Addressed This Challenge

This project addresses the types of problems one may encounter in the present situation  such as a decline in mood,  cognition, morale, or interpersonal interaction. People could also develop a  sleep disorder because the circadian rhythm might be thrown off due to the stress of prolonged isolation and confinement.  Depression could occur. Fatigue is inevitable given that there will be  times with heavy workload and shifting schedules.Periods of monotony may lead to boredom.  Misunderstandings and impaired communications with  members  staying at home might impact body system performance. The more confined and isolated humans are, the more likely they are to  develop behavioral or cognitive conditions, and psychiatric disorders.

How I Developed This Project

Human beings are social animals. As till date no vaccine or medicine has been found for protection from Covid-19' , social distancing is the only solution.  ISOCIALIZATION chose this challenge because at this point of time in which all human beings are away from each other, combatting the health problems due to seclusion is the main issue.

For astronauts isolation has become a way of life.So space agency data provides the best insight into the mental conditions of people in isolation. The resources have been taken from NASA Human Research Program ,interviews of NASA Astronauts Peggy Whitson , Anne McClain, Ronald Moomaw, NASA Pyschologist Tom Williams, opinions of Atsuhiro Mitsumaru, principal medical officer of the Human Spaceflight Technology Directorate at Japan's space agency and ISEMSI and EXEMSI campaign of ESA.

Problem that was faced was relating the lifeless environment on space to the earth environment full of biological diversity. The great achievement was while researching about life of astronauts on space ,I could accept the present situation in a much better way and above all I could put in my effort to help the world in this time of crisis.
