Social distancing policies enacted the world over during the COVID-19 pandemic have left many people socially isolated. Your challenge is to develop innovative solutions to combat social isolation.

The unISOLATED app

Summary

Being in isolation often makes you lose yourself and forget to step back and recharge. With this app, you will be frequently reminded to take care of yourself; be it to drink a glass of water as soon as you wake up in the morning, to message a loved one to tell them you're doing well and healthy or to remind you to give yourself a break from work by gaming with your friends! These small nudges would ensure that even the simplest tasks are achievable on days you don't feel like doing anything.

Self-isolation due to the pandemic has led to a massive increase in declining mental health. Derived from DSM-V, sudden huge stressful events are major prerequisites to depressive, anxiety, and sleep-wake disorders, leading to the abandonment on an individual’s healthy lifestyle. However, just because we are physically isolated, that doesn’t mean we should be socially isolated too. Our app ensures that you are not alone in these dire times.

Introducing, unISOLATED - an app that features customized schedules in maintaining physical well-being and accessible connections to mental health professionals.  No one will be left isolated.

Here are the features currently available in the app:

1. Fitness coach

Users can navigate through the "health" bar to fill up their age, job and lifestyle. Through machine learning, the app will customize daily exercise routines to fit the user's current needs. Users will be able to tweak how rigorous they want these exercises to be up to their preference. Alerts will be sent to users at a set time in a day, which we call the "Routine call!" - to mimic duty call in a working environment.

2. Access to virtual therapy 

Communicate with certified mental health professionals through a click of a button! Using our chat service, users can consult with these professionals and make video calls through third party apps (facetime, skype, & etc) installed in their phones.

3. Self-care companion

This app will send push notifications to remind you of the most mundane tasks but very crucial indeed to maintain a sense of normalcy in our lives. Expect a warm reminder to have a good, hearty breakfast meal in the morning, a little nudge for you to make time for your hobby and many more! We tend to pick-up our phones at certain hours in a day, like the moment we wake up, lunchtime and before sleeping, thus, these notifications are paced-out in a way that it follows the pick-up habits of the users.

4. SleepWell

This feature ensures that you get up and sleep around the same time every day with reminders to unwind and relax before indulging in a good night's rest. What makes it an edge smarter than any other sleep tracker out there is the machine-learning software behind SleepWell which recommends bedtime podcasts for users who struggle with insomnia.


With all of these features conveniently built into one app, users won't find the need to choose from the plethora of apps out there. Nevertheless, there is so much more that we plan to offer that spans beyond just these four categories.

Future Plans for unISOLATED

 1. SafeZones

We look forward in incorporating a map featureallowing users to see which parts of their city are currently labelled as Red Zone and Safe Zone. Shall they proceed in going out due to urgent matters, the algorithm in this map feature will calculate the path they should take to reduce the spread of coronavirus. We look forward in working with government officials in providing the data for this feature.

2.  "Ping!"

The "Ping" feature connects you to a different user every day; it serves as a 'check-in' for you and the person on the other end. Share a light conversation, joke or anecdote if you wish! This feature will help you overcome the fear of meeting new people.

3. In-app Communication

We are working to make video calls directly available within our application, eliminating the need of using any third party application!



How We Developed This Project

Background

unISOLATED is a collaborative project between first-year undergraduate students from Malaysia and Indonesia, birthed over the span of 48-hours and countless Discord calls. We came up with the idea of producing an all-in-one app upon acknowledging the fact that there is an overwhelming number of self-care, mindfulness, exercise and sleep tracker apps to choose from.

So, we went on to identify the similarities between what NASA astronauts experience in space and to what we're currently experiencing at home. We learned that in order to maintain sanity in a confined space for long periods of time, a person has to establish sustainable habits. Inspired by NASA astronaut Anne McClain's 'Tips for Living in Close Quarters', we came to focus on two aspects of these habits -  communication and self-care. Thus, came the app!

Developing unISOLATED

Considering that this app has a global target audience of Android and iOS users, we built a hybrid mobile app which only takes one development cycle, making the project much more efficient and robust. We used Flutter, an open-source UI software development kit, as the framework and Dart as the programming language of our application.  

For the back-end operation and data storage of the application, we used Firebase by Google in which the back-end operations are based on Google infrastructures. Google's authentication system is selected for the in-app user identification, allowing easy access for everyone. We aim to produce a well-integrated application based on Google infrastructures, shortening the time needed to develop this soon-to-be well-known application.

Accomplishments & Overcoming Challenges

Collaboration - Our proudest achievement is definitely in forming a strong Malaysian-Indonesian friendship! Our national soccer teams might be rivals, but when in comes to the betterment of mankind, we work so well together as a family!

Communication - Despite being complete strangers, we were all champs for not letting shyness get in our way! We're proud to be able to pull this project off even from not seeing each other's faces. Thank You, Discord.

Skills & Expertise -  All of us came into this competition not knowing anything about hackathons. But we had one common goal, which was to learn! Our team consists of six individuals; all bringing different skill sets to the table. What we lack in one area, we make up for it in another! So here's to learning, growing and making new experiences, together!

Where Credit's Due
