The Isolation Solution

Social distancing policies enacted the world over during the COVID-19 pandemic have left many people socially isolated. Your challenge is to develop innovative solutions to combat social isolation.

Lumus - Project

Summary

Lumus's project was created to help people between 14 years old to middle-age that are suffering the pandemic consequences and also fit in one of 2 profiles: the first is the group with a lot of time at home and can not find any kind of motivation to live and the second group is quite busier. It's an app with daily activities for personal development that were inspired by Anne McClain's interview (5 tips for living in space - or anywhere) and the human intelligences worked in the Scout movement.

How We Addressed This Challenge

Lumus app is not just a solution to combat social isolation, but to inspire people to do the best for them and for people who are around. The daily activities were based in the tips from the astronaut Anne McClain that explore the areas of communication (how to listen and question to understand), leadership (how the group - or family, adapts to changed situations), self-care (keeping track of how healthy the person in on a psychological and physical levels), team-care (how healthy the group is on psychological, physical and logistical levels) and group living (how people cooperate and become a team to achieve a goal) . The human intelligences (physical, social, affective, character, spiritual and intellectual) worked by rovers in the Scout movement are also important and combine with the astronaut tips, because both of them are the key to improve personal habilities in social and individual areas.

How We Developed This Project

The inspiration was personal for the team, because all of integrants are living the experiences from the pandemic: like no motivation or lot of responsabilities to do, both of them discussed to be types of personal behaviors. Besides that are many international and national news about how the population is dealing with this crisis, how depression and stress are increasing on families (according BBC Brazil, the county of Xi'am - China, the numbers of divorces was a record). That is why the group shared feelings and thoughts about how the team could help in an easy, simple and good looking way. Then, the idea of the app emerged by reading an astronaut's interview (shared as an example resource for the challenge) about how to live in confined spaces and teaches how to improve yourself and for the team. One of the main problems was to define a specific public for the app, but after the studies on Play Store's Index, the team figured out that increased in 100% the searching for meditation apps (example from one of the spiritual areas)  exactly in the maximum high level from global isolation. To look for the main users, was built a graphic to show the average of age in each state in Brazil, and it reaches the young and adults, so the team's goal was achieved, a public was defined.
