The Isolation Solution

Social distancing policies enacted the world over during the COVID-19 pandemic have left many people socially isolated. Your challenge is to develop innovative solutions to combat social isolation.

Waves APP

Summary

Waves App wants to help people in social isolation cope better with mental and physical issues. In order to improve health the app gives people opportunities to engage in different activities while earning points that can be donated to NGOs sponsored by brands/businesses. The major idea is helping people in opposite social situations, people who can stay at home just as people in vulnerability.

How We Addressed This Challenge

Social distancing is the most effective way to decrease the spread of COVID-19 worldwide. In Brazil, it stands at approximately 39.2%. It is known that the lack of social contact can trigger a series of problems involving mental and physical illness such as depression, anxiety and physical inactivity. In many cases, self isolation represent difficulty in accessing basic incomes and needs such as water and food. Our project addresses this challenge because it can help both sides of this scenario. People that are at home, feeling alone and anxious and also, people in social vulnerability. Waves aims to connect them.

How We Developed This Project

Our first inspiration to choose the Isolation solution challenge was identification. We had been living this reality for the past two months in Brazil. However, we know it is not the reality for the most part of our population. Many people today in our country do not have the option to stay at home because our government is not providing enough financial support.

In order to solve our challenge we used the software Miro for design thinking methodology to find the major problem and the best solutions to address the isolation issue. In this process each one of us wrote eight solutions in eight minutes and then democratically was chosen the idea that became our project.

We used the Nasa websites to understand better how long-term isolation can affect people's mental and physical health. We were inspired by Anne MCclain interview, an astronaut,  she gave five tips for living in Space. We also used more information from the Nasa website about NEK/Sirius and HERA research that shows how time management, self-care and social skills are important to reduce the isolation consequences.

Figma, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Premiere Pro and Adobe Photoshop were the most used softwares to build the APP layout and our pitch. The most challenging part for our group in this process was coping with the limited time to create the APP.

Data & Resources

In our research, we used the Nasa Website, specifically the “Social Isolation in Context” part.  To create our APP we were inspired by "The 5 steps for living in Space - or anywhere" by astronaut Anne MCclain. Besides, we used the activities from the different levels of education based in the necessary skills to live in the space and also in the earth, like time management, cultural awareness, recognizing the diversity and social skills. These activities inspired our APP to be a helpful tool for people learning and sharing mental and physical healthy activities in order to live the isolation time in the best way possible.

At Nasa Website, we also used data from the NEK/Sirius and HERA research about social isolation. We found information that demonstrates good time management, self-care and attention to social skills are important to reduce the effects of the isolation.
