Light the Path

The COVID-19 pandemic initiated changes in human population movements and activities around the world. Your challenge is to use Earth observations to explore how human activity and regional land-based human movement patterns may have shifted in response to COVID-19.

Indicator of migration of people by night images

Summary

Through this project, the Andromeda team sought, for the most part, to analyze the migration of people in the Atlantic zone of Colombia. Using the MatLab programming tool, images obtained by the SUOMI NPP satellite were processed, obtaining line profiles to detect the differences before and during the quarantine by Covid-19. In addition to the analysis, the Andromeda team created a website so that all the public has access to this information quickly and very easily.

How We Addressed This Challenge

The Andromeda team project covers the challenge lighting the path since the tools and data provided were used to develop analyzes and help detect human movement and activity before and during the pandemic.

How We Developed This Project

We chose this challenge in order to help rulers make better decisions during this emergency by analyzing satellite images in a much more accurate way. As an objective, we decided that this would be a means for all the rulers to make better decisions before this type of situation. In this proyect we use data from NASA's Suomi npp satellite to get infrared night images. To develop our project, we used MatLab software and the image analysis package, as hadware, the infrared sensor for night images of the SUOMI NPP satellite. Our problems were clearly presented at the time of developing the code to obtain results, and as a result we have a magnificent experience in carrying out these types of challenges and of course we learned about many topics, applications and data that we had never used.

Data & Resources

The data and resources used in this challenge are:

  • EOSDOS WORLDVIEW website - night images (almost constant contrast improved) SUOMI NPP - VIIRS
  • Capable corrected reflectance base for SUOMIN NPP - VIIRS
