The COVID-19 pandemic initiated changes in human population movements and activities around the world. Your challenge is to use Earth observations to explore how human activity and regional land-based human movement patterns may have shifted in response to COVID-19.

COVID Space Observers (CSO)

Summary

The project discussed the ways of satellites to observe the human's activities' change on Earth as a result of spreading of COVID19 and this can be achieved by: night time light and atmospheric observations. The night time lights are observed by (VIIRS) satellite that helps in identifying from people's settlement and direction of movement to the ships moving and the atmospheric changes (Nitrogen dioxide and Aerosol optical depth), in order to help in recognizing the effect of people's behaviors.

How We Addressed This Challenge

Our team’s challenge was light the path. It was about how human activities were changed due to the spreading of COVID-19. We first started by giving a glimpse about the COVID-19 and how the world was lacking enough information about dealing with such epidemics. After that, we discussed how it affected different parts of our everyday life like the public transport, and public health. We supported our assumptions by providing information which was collected from different resources from which are the resources provided by NASA. After that, we discussed the different technologies that were used simultaneously to provide such information. Our team also discussed how the observations from the outer space helped NASA and the other space research institutions understand the changes in the human activities through collecting the lights emitted from the Earth. Finally, we discussed the impacts of the epidemic, our research, and earth’s observation on the society.

How We Developed This Project

My team was so enthusiastic about choosing this Challenge; because staying at home and leaving all our activities inspire us to know how COVID-19 really affects the other human activities. Furthermore, using the Earth observations in such a Challenge is perfect for knowing exact results. To develop the project more complicated satellites must be applied to Be able to detect the gases, motion or even light waves more easily. So using space agency was a must, as it helped us a lot is collecting much data about the world's human activity before and after COVID-19 like data We get from the Maps. To make our project We use a lot of coding languages such as HTML and Java script, also three laptops were used as a hardware, and finally the design programs for our project.During the project We face a lot of challenges as choosing the project that was not easy and after we chose it we found that it was not the best solution so We decided to look for another one in a short time, but We made it as a team and this itself is the achievement.
