Light the Path

The COVID-19 pandemic initiated changes in human population movements and activities around the world. Your challenge is to use Earth observations to explore how human activity and regional land-based human movement patterns may have shifted in response to COVID-19.

Find the Way

Summary

Our platform offers an unique experience on light-source image correlation, making it easy to analyze social displacement and movement throughout COVID-19 pandemic. Observe and understand patterns and trends in metropolitan and rural scenarios by our time-lapse comparative mechanism, and find out which would be the near future occupation condition of different cities. Join us on this journey and increase your understanding over human displacement on pandemic times.

How We Addressed This Challenge

Our project fits in the "light the path" challenge because it creates a tool that is made not only for this pandemic, it is made to analyse human displacement behaviour in future pandemic scenarios too.

How We Developed This Project

We chose this challenge because each member of our team identified it as the most relevant one, since analysing and predicting human behaviour in a pandemic is a major task in overcoming the crisis. We used the Nasa Worldview software to take images of the earth nightly lights, and then comparing them to analyse how luminous intensity shows that population has changed during a certain time range. To acomplish that, we used softwares such as Matlab, Jupyter notebooks, and Wix.
