Purify the Air Supply

Has your time spent indoors increased during the COVID-19 pandemic as a result of stay-at-home and shelter-in-place policies worldwide? Your challenge is to use the International Space Station (ISS) as inspiration and develop a system to monitor and/or purify indoor air. It is entirely up to you whether the system you design is able to be used on Earth (for example in homes, businesses, transportation, etc.) and/or in space.

Monitor your indoor air quality

Summary

Most advanced indoor air quality that provides you with data, insights, alerts, recommendations and automations to help you create a healthier and safer indoor environment (homes and workplaces), thereby improving your health and wellbeing

How I Addressed This Challenge

The first step to fixing problem is to know the problem. In order to fix air quality, you need to know what kind of pollutants are present, how much of it, the trends over time and it's possible sources. We provide you answers to all of these so you can clearly define the problems. Once the problems are defined, we also provide you with possible remediation strategies that you can take to address them.

How I Developed This Project

We have respiratory conditions (asthma, rhinitis, etc) and this has always been a problem whenever we go to various indoor spaces such as hotels, malls, schools, offices, etc. There is very little knowledge and action being taken to address this because people generally are not aware of the quality of air they breathe.

To address that problem, we need to show people what they breathe and how it is affecting their health, comfort, safety and wellbeing. Only when it hits them in the face will they start to take action.

Our solution comprises both hardware (sensors) and software (AI, cloud, frontend interfaces). The hardware connects via WiFi and all information is sent to the cloud. The cloud processes this data. Users interact with the system via the mobile app or dashboard where they can visualize the data, get alerts when air quality is not optimal, receive insights and recommendations on what they can do to improve it, and even automate their homes and offices with our cloud.
