Purify the Air Supply

Has your time spent indoors increased during the COVID-19 pandemic as a result of stay-at-home and shelter-in-place policies worldwide? Your challenge is to use the International Space Station (ISS) as inspiration and develop a system to monitor and/or purify indoor air. It is entirely up to you whether the system you design is able to be used on Earth (for example in homes, businesses, transportation, etc.) and/or in space.

AIR WARDEN - Game Changing Face Mask

Summary

We have designed a prototype of a face mask that has a built in ventilation system with mini turbines functioning as sensors to detect the inhaling and exhaling of the user to activate the fans. Extra functions include IoT features by sending the air quality data to a mobile app in the phone via bluetooth and a radar technology to detect the number of people near the user to adjust the performance of the ventilation system accordingly.

How We Addressed This Challenge

during the covid-19 pandemic, face masks have become a necessity, even more so for front liners, they wear the masks for about 8 hours per day. The curent mask do not have a ventilation system and can cause quite some discomfort for the user, so we have designed a face mask that has a ventilation system to address this problem.

How We Developed This Project

We were inspired to make this prototype as we see the exhausted faces of the front liners with imprints of face masks after a hard days work, we want to alleviate some of their burden. Furthermore, we too wear face masks very frequently and come to a realisation that the face masks have very minimal ventilation. Therefore we wanted to provide a solution for this issue. We used a 3D- modelling software named SKETCHUP for the design of our prototype, and PHPTOSHOP CC to visualize our mobile app features.
