Purify the Air Supply

Has your time spent indoors increased during the COVID-19 pandemic as a result of stay-at-home and shelter-in-place policies worldwide? Your challenge is to use the International Space Station (ISS) as inspiration and develop a system to monitor and/or purify indoor air. It is entirely up to you whether the system you design is able to be used on Earth (for example in homes, businesses, transportation, etc.) and/or in space.

Modified Electrostatic-based purification (MEBP)

Summary

An innovative tool that imposes the Pure Air standards, the proposed solution works on disposing of airborne particles while being energy- and ozone-efficient and preserving high durability. The removal is achieved by electrostatically electrifying particulate matter (PM) floating in air using a revolutionary pin-to-plate corona discharge technology. As opposed to the regular exposed-pins design, the pins are put in a plastic box with an inlet of pumped clean air to create a micro-atmosphere around them devoid of flying particles—crippling the obstruction of the corona discharge phenomena by having the particles settle on the pins.

How We Addressed This Challenge

The project's main focus is alleviating the air pollution challenge during the COVID-19 pandemic and helping nature to recover, NASA's Data show that nitrogen dioxide levels in March 2020 are about 30% lower on average, and this show how nature already start to recover.but this solve outdoor purification only .so (MEBP) works on purifying indoor air particles using obtainable materials. It is believed that if the project was intensively applied, it would constitute a great part in solving the aforementioned challenge.


How We Developed This Project

Electrostatic-based purification technology is a method to remove airborne particles and can diminish the energy consumption of air-conditioning fans in buildings because of its low-pressure drop. In this study, we developed a brand-new pin-to-plate corona"COVID 19" discharger with particle-free external air protection to forestall particles polluting the surface of demobilisation pins. By using an optical microscope, we observed a specific number of particles deposited on the non-protected (exposed pins). We experimentally studied the long-term performances of the exposed and guarded pins in single-pass PM removal efficiency and ozone production. The results showed that the protected pins produce less ozone and have the next breakdown voltage than the exposed pins. Experimental results indicated that the improved pin-to-plate corona discharger has better long-term performance and is safer than the exposed one. so (MEBP) is suggestion purifying system for future without pollution. (MEBP)  filter can enhance the single-pass removal efficiency of a low-pressure drop coarse filter from 0.4% to 99.0% (for 0.3 ~ 0.5 μm PM).

Nasa Air Quality provided us Analysis of the COVID-19 Pandemic.ESA gives us information about changing in the percentage of air quality around the world and the biological air filter for the international space station that inspires us to make a new air filter in a new vision that can also use in space.
