Purify the Air Supply

Has your time spent indoors increased during the COVID-19 pandemic as a result of stay-at-home and shelter-in-place policies worldwide? Your challenge is to use the International Space Station (ISS) as inspiration and develop a system to monitor and/or purify indoor air. It is entirely up to you whether the system you design is able to be used on Earth (for example in homes, businesses, transportation, etc.) and/or in space.

Airdialisis | Purify the Air Supply

Summary

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic people must stay isolated at home. This event increased an already existing problem: poor indoor air quality. It is extremely important to bring a solution to this problem, because it is the cause of many diseases, especially respiratory. With that in mind, we have created an IoT technology that can make a palliative air treatment and also monitor the air quality in that environment.

How We Addressed This Challenge

Our project consists of developing a system to monitor and purify the internal air. It has an environment impact that involves health, environmental, economic and technological issues. This can be challenging to the science, but also possible thanks to the undeniable technological advances of the last years. The project will directly improve people's quality of life, promoting benefits to nature and the economic issues, as it may be used in space missions for the survival of astronauts outside Earth.

How We Developed This Project

According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO), air pollution currently represents the greatest environmental risk to health. There are seven million deaths a year due to respiratory problems caused by pollutants, such as asthma and lung cancer. The solution is scientifically valid! We use to the project technological resources based on scientific studies, emphasizing the use of data and resources made available by NASA and global supporters. The project may impact on a large proportion both lives of ordinary people and also companies, reducing several current problems related to air quality. In our project we will create an filter, which will purify the air using a material that reproduces Type C Ultraviolet Light. The effect of this light on our skin has a germicidal action, being able to eliminate the action of viruses and bacteria. The sensors will monitoring and collect the air information, creating a database, where the user could interact and analyzed the air from that zone.

Tools we use:

  • Oracle cloud and Heroku to host the code;
  • Nasa-date for analysis of air quality in urban cities;
  • Tinkercad for Modeling the Arduino Cloud IDE;
  • C / C ++ language for coding.

For the hardware:

  • ATMEG328P microcontroller;
  • NodeMCU 8266;
  • Gas sensor;
  • Temperature sensor;
  • GPS;
  • plastic chassis to store the filter.

Project Demo

We are the Airdialisis. We are concerned about your air. Do you know why?

According to studies, 7 million deaths happen a year due to respiratory problems caused by pollutants. That concentration levels can be two to five times higher indoors than outdoors.

With this in mind, we developed an Iot technology, which monitors and performs the treatment in the internal environment.

We are making this feature available so everyone has access to quality air.
