Purify the Air Supply

Has your time spent indoors increased during the COVID-19 pandemic as a result of stay-at-home and shelter-in-place policies worldwide? Your challenge is to use the International Space Station (ISS) as inspiration and develop a system to monitor and/or purify indoor air. It is entirely up to you whether the system you design is able to be used on Earth (for example in homes, businesses, transportation, etc.) and/or in space.

AirRise Project

Summary

Our challenge was to create a model to monitor or purify the indoor air, with the challenge in mind, choose to develop hardware that can monitor the levels of gases in the internal environment and inform the user, preserving the health of the same, thus the ministry of the environment, NASA follows a strict air quality standard, which in cases can be a matter of life and death, for example on the ISS, so our prototype performs monitoring 24 hours a day and returns an alert to the user the air le

How We Addressed This Challenge

The challenge chosen was challenge # 8 Purify the air supply

The challenge shows one of the facts of the increase in time spent indoors, which would be due to the result of policies to stay at home during the pandemic.

And our project is 100% linked to this challenge, because our idea created for the prototype was to make a device where it will be installed inside the user's home, and Hardware will collect information about the air quality at the site and will send it in real time for the web platform, where the data will be handled according to norms of the Brazilian Ministry of the Environment and the data taken from NASA on the gases.

How We Developed This Project

Challenge 8 caught our attention because it reports the reality of many people in this quarantine period, most of the people then making the social distance from their homes, and they don't even know that the air quality around them may be harmful to their health. To solve this problem, our team decided to make a prototype first, a lamp holder was used with an Arduino uno and a gas sensor “mg 135” and to catch the gases that are in place and for the visual demonstration, two LEDs were installed indicating the two . After collecting this data, the data is sent via the serial port to be processed and sent to the database using the python programming language. As for the development of the backend, the PHP language was used to make the user interface showing the collected data and generating visual information with a friendly interface, Arduino reads it using and through a script made with the Python language it takes the data and insert it into the Mysql database, thus leaving data to feed the frontend. The importance of monitoring quality and quality, and the importance of studies on air quality, are something extremely important for the population, NASA and other activities have been collaborating with tools and technologies to carry out the study and the monitoring of the studies caused The changes caused by air quality in certain regions and the damage caused by the population residing in a place where air quality is very poor, and in space air quality is a matter of life and death for crew.
