Purify the Air Supply

Has your time spent indoors increased during the COVID-19 pandemic as a result of stay-at-home and shelter-in-place policies worldwide? Your challenge is to use the International Space Station (ISS) as inspiration and develop a system to monitor and/or purify indoor air. It is entirely up to you whether the system you design is able to be used on Earth (for example in homes, businesses, transportation, etc.) and/or in space.

Breathe Together

Summary

A system to monitoring the air quality inside public transport, to provide information of safety condition to the passenger, company owner and government, trough data intelligence from local and NASA satellites atmospheric measurement.

How We Addressed This Challenge

What is it?

A system similar done by ESA to the ISS, to monitor the quality of the air inside public transport, to provide information of safety conditions to the passenger, company owner and government, through data intelligence information from or device in the local and NASA’s satellites (e.g. Aqua and OCO-2) atmospheric measurements.

How does it work?

An equipment installed inside buses and subways to monitor air parameters and send it to a cloud that also receives information from NASA’s satellite data bank. Data intelligence in the cloud compares the local data with background pollution from satellites to predict the quality and safety inside the transport.

Why?

After the quarantine global crisis due to COVID19, millions of people will use public transport such as buses and subways, but these are the second place with more risk of transmission, losing just for hospitals.

We propose a system monitoring to deliver information to the final user and government, so they can make safest decisions.

How We Developed This Project

Since air is being considering the main driver for COVID-19 transmission, air quality will be essential to our daily activities after the quarantine. After we discover that public transport is a place with high risk of contamination e low security measures, we decide to find a solution for it. Based on ISS air quality monitoring/purification and in the NASA’s satellites that monitore the atmospheric condition, we think o something that have similar function and changes information with NASA data.
