Purify the Air Supply

Has your time spent indoors increased during the COVID-19 pandemic as a result of stay-at-home and shelter-in-place policies worldwide? Your challenge is to use the International Space Station (ISS) as inspiration and develop a system to monitor and/or purify indoor air. It is entirely up to you whether the system you design is able to be used on Earth (for example in homes, businesses, transportation, etc.) and/or in space.

1 POINT | 1 SOLUTION

Summary

1 POINT | 1 SOLUTION is a system for real-time monitoring of air currents in urban areas and mapping the dispersion of chemical or biological pollutants. 1 POINT | 1 SOLUTION is a complementary solution of classic monitoring systems, which consists of an airflow simulator in different environments, taking into account existing urban architecture and local and national climate models, in order to optimize and improve the ecological development of cities.

How We Addressed This Challenge

Public entities: Local public councils (Environmental Directorates, Public Health Directorates, Urbanism and Territorial Planning   Directorates), Environmental Agencies.  Directive Ministry of Health (models of air-viruses in urban areas)

Private entities:    real estate societies developers, consulting and design of civil and industrial, constructions companies, travel construction bags, law firms, environmental, protection NGOs, end users.

For the authorities:  studies and models   to combat pollution and spread of pathogens    and their effectiveness in the external environment

For citizens: ensuring a clean environment, fast intervention services intervention in case of need, monitoring various parameters through environmental sensors

For the community:     identification of     air quality risk areas, incident prevention, reduce the risk of spreading pathogens

How We Developed This Project

At a glance

According to statistical data published by the UN, in 2019, the world's population is 7.6 billion of which 4.2 billion live in urban areas and the remaining 3.4 billion in rural areas. According to the same study, by 2050, the population will exceed 9.8 billion of which 6.7 billion will live in urban and 3.1 in rural areas. Recent studies estimate that by 2050, the percentage of the urban population will reach 70%.

Pollution is one of the great problems of the metropolises. According to  an  analysis published  by the  World Health Organization  (WHO),  nearly  90% of the   world's urban population  breathes air with  much higher levels of  pollutants  than  the recommended thresholds  and  about  7  million people  die  annually  from the effects of air  pollution of which more than  500,000 are  children under 5 years of age.  Air pollution is the main cause of decreased      immunity, a respiratory   and eye diseases, lung cancer, acute and chronic bronchitis and asthma attacks, cardiovascular disease . The main  affected are children and pregnant  women  (including  pregnancies)  and  the  elderly.

A    major danger to public health is the spread of microbes and viruses but also the multiplication of the main vectors of transmission. The spread of viruses, especially in urban areas, can quickly turn into a pandemic. The most eloquent example is the COVID-19 pandemic. Since Dec 2019 and until now, over 4,900,000 people have been infected with COVID-19 of which over 300,000 have died (for updated information on the number of infected and deaths globally you can access https: //www.worldometers .info / coronavirus)

Worldwide, there are 4037 cities with over 100,000 inhabitants and over 10,000 under 100,000 inhabitants. In Romania there are 319 cities of which 25 with over 100,000 inhabitants. Currently all the cities of the world occupy approximately 1% of the dry surface of the planet.

Applicability of our solution: in all urban areas regardless of their location or size.

Using data from Copernicus and its fleet of Sentinel satellites, temporary sensors will be installed at key points to receive confirmation and live feeds about aerosol agents. As a satellite data packet we will use Aerosol Optical Depth to determine possible areas that will require ground scans. After that the results of Aerosol Optical Depth will overlap with those on the ground in order to accurately assess the impact of pathogens. The use of geospatial data and ground data, the analysis of pollutant dissemination through air currents depending on the urban architecture will lead to analyzes and reports that will be the basis of pollution reduction plans and implicitly the factors that affect the health of the population, respectively they lead to the weakening of the immune system and affect the respiratory system.

Time series of surface concentrations of the key air pollutants (NO2, PM2.5, PM10 and ozone) are useful to assess their variability and to monitor possible trends in their evolution. The values are representative of areas of 10 km x 10 km and cannot reproduce local effects due to the immediate proximity of sources; they represent the ‘urban background’, which corresponds to what is measured in a quiet area (for instance a large park) in or around the respective cities. For more detailed information, please consult your local air quality agency, especially in the case of a pollution peak or a pollution alert.

Altogether, these timeseries provide information on how background air pollution has evolved over the weeks since the beginning of the COVID-19 outbreak.

1 POINT | 1 SOLUTION is a system for forecasting air pollution (chemical, biological), assessing its impact on the health of the population and warning responsible factors, in conjunction with short, medium and long-term urban development plans in urban areas.

1 POINT system 1 SOLUTION is a very useful tool for decision making, with a complex database of georeferenced deterministic information to document, prevent and reduce the danger of chronic and accidental degradation of air quality, both for the benefit of the population and the environment. Bringing together in a single system: monitoring, forecasting, impact study, application and planning in the field of air quality, leads to the creation of a tool for sustainable development in air quality management in urban areas.

The architecture and the way of integrating the data obtained from the sensors located at street level with the data provided by the satellites, in a single system, lead to a better knowledge of the transmission of pollutants and pathogens, taking quick measures based on accurate and real-time data against air pollution and pathogens.

IMPACT

Economic impact: The European Environment Agency has estimated that in Romania, approximately 28,000 premature deaths were associated with air pollution in 2013. It is estimated that, in total, external health-related costs resulting from air pollution in Romania amount to over EUR 10 billion / year. Direct economic costs refer to 4.5 million working days lost each year due to air pollution-related diseases, with associated costs for employers of EUR 257 million / year, for healthcare over EUR 31 million / year and for agriculture (crop losses) amounting to EUR 106 million / year.

Social impact: The social impact of the I point | 1 solution project is given by the reduction of pathogens in public spaces subject to decontamination and hence a healthier and more productive community. Recent studies in the areas most affected by the pandemic have highlighted the fact that there is a definite relationship between the COVID 19 pandemic and air pollution. I point | 1 solution will be an important element of the strategy to combat the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic community. Reducing health spending and growth - healthier people mean more productive people, are other factors of immediate impact on society.

Environmental impact: I point | 1 solution will support the resilience and sustainable development of cities by constant and real-time monitoring of air currents, humidity, temperature, atmospheric pressure, etc. in urban areas and mapping the dispersion of chemical or biological pollutants

Impact in the community: a high zonal rating in terms of air quality is a benefit for real estate developers or city managers who have as their main concern the quality of life in the urban environment.
