Purify the Air Supply

Has your time spent indoors increased during the COVID-19 pandemic as a result of stay-at-home and shelter-in-place policies worldwide? Your challenge is to use the International Space Station (ISS) as inspiration and develop a system to monitor and/or purify indoor air. It is entirely up to you whether the system you design is able to be used on Earth (for example in homes, businesses, transportation, etc.) and/or in space.

DeCOVID Destroy Covid on Earth in Air and Space!

Summary

Decontamination of air, liquid and porous media from coronavirus by acoustic radiation and ets.Technology and devices for the disinfection of air, liquid and porous media from bacteria and viruses. The destruction of viruses occurs through the acoustic impact of a specially selected frequency and amplitude & a combination of acoustic, thermal, optical and magnetic fieldsDisinfection can be performed in soft and porous tissues, respirator chambers, ventilation systems, sewage.

How We Addressed This Challenge

Creation on board the ISS of a disinfection unit capable of in a short time to proliferate the entire volume of air inside the ISS.

Application for the installation of external energy sources with minimal energy consumption

The aim of the project is the development of technology and devices for the disinfection of air, liquid and porous media from bacteria and viruses. The destruction of viruses occurs through the acoustic impact of a specially selected frequency and amplitude. For acoustic impact, it is planned to develop devices of a certain power with a given exposure time.

Disinfection can be performed in soft and porous tissues, respirator chambers, structural elements of ventilation systems, sewage and incoming water pipes. To enhance the effect, it is possible to use a combination of acoustic, thermal, optical and magnetic fields.

The new technology proposed for development has next advantages over existing: high penetration ability into porous materials and surfaces, reduction in the number of mechanical operations, exception of the use of toxic chemicals, and high energy efficiency.

The devices will be used to disinfect the premises of mobile hospitals, residential and public buildings, for personal protection, for the disinfection of clothing, furniture, postmail.

The proposed technology can help in the treatment and protection of people in the conditions of viral pandemics.

•In the context of the emergence of viral pandemics, the problem of disinfecting air, liquids, inside porous media, cloth, and surfaces becomes extremely urgent

•The problem is proposed to be solved by a method that consists in the mechanical action on the virus body with pressure and their following rupture. The mechanical effect on the body is carried out by acoustic vibrations with the amplitude of sound pressure in the air, equal to the ratio of the rupture force of the virus tissues in their cross-sectional area and the frequency equal to the natural frequency the body of the virus or the natural frequency of one of its vital components, for example, the envelope of the virus.

The new technology proposed for development has next advantages over existing:

  • high penetration ability into porous materials and surfaces,
  • reduction in the number of mechanical operations,
  • exception of the use of toxic chemicals,
  • high energy efficiency

The development of technology on board the ISS involves the creation of additional external panels for quick and effective air disinfection due to the energy of solar radiation.

These panels will be able to increase the protection of the ISS from other dangerous factors.

How We Developed This Project

With the outbreak of the pandemic, our team came up with the idea of using acoustic radiation to kill viruses.

We have created a prototype of our technology.

During the Hackathon, we familiarized ourselves with NASA materials, received consultations from mentors and colleagues at the forum.

We decided to supplement our solution with new elements and technologies.
