Purify the Air Supply

Has your time spent indoors increased during the COVID-19 pandemic as a result of stay-at-home and shelter-in-place policies worldwide? Your challenge is to use the International Space Station (ISS) as inspiration and develop a system to monitor and/or purify indoor air. It is entirely up to you whether the system you design is able to be used on Earth (for example in homes, businesses, transportation, etc.) and/or in space.

Summary

After thea normal air filter, Air passed through a duct with a large surface area that made contact with the air made of titanium oxide photocatalyst using a copper promoter. Then the air passed through alcohol liquid and send to the facility, vehicles and nature.

How I Addressed This Challenge

The title of IoT Earth Purify Unite System.

I myself would like to become an astronaut as a doctor in the future, so I chose the theme of clean air supply related to manned space development.

Since I am not an engineer but a medical student. So, I tried to create a new air purification system by combining existing technology and things. And tried to create CAD data as a product.

First, let's talk about the inside of the facility and the vehicle. In the hospital, by making the operating room positive pressure, the air flows to the negative pressure outside, so that it is filled with clean air. By creating this air flow from the positive pressure to the negative pressure, the air flow is controlled to some extent. Controlled air passes through a duct containing a monitor that measures the quality of the air.

The monitor is IoT, and information is shared with tablets or PC.  After passing the air through an ordinary air filter, install a duct designed so that as much air as possible is exposed to the titanium oxide photocatalyst using the copper promoter. Then through the container which filled with alcohol liquid which put in place of water as in the case of water replacement.

To use this air purify system and sends purified air into the facility or vehicle after passing it.

I will explain why I used these two substances.

Coronavirus is vulnerable to alcohol. The reason I used alcohol is that envelope viruses with a lipid membrane such as coronavirus are easily damaged by alcohol disinfectants. The alcohol box is placed below because alcohol easily evaporates. The reason why I put alcohol container on the floor is that enables people to refill alcohol with ease and safe. The reason why I used a duct that the titanium oxide photocatalyst that uses a copper promoter is that allows a large amount of air to come in contact with the infectious virus can be greatly inactivated simply by irradiating the light of a fluorescent lamp.

Therefore, I want to install this duct in two or more places below. It would be good to place where this duct where the sunlight hit directly. The other place is that the duct can hit light in the room at night.  I thought it could be used for manned space development, where it is necessary to send safe air as much as possible because people can not ventilate at there.

Also, if you want to use this system in an already built house or ISS, you can install it on a drone such as JAXA's Int-Ball ,or paint the catalyst with the previous paint or replace the glass with the catalyst duct.  I think that there would be no need for major construction.

I thought connecting satellite data with all IoT-based air purification systems. Since we can get air pollution data from satellites, I thought that IoT air purification system can reduce the power consumption by connecting the air pollution estimate data to air purification system.

Those air purification system is turning on when the area’s air estimated to pollute.

Also, it seems that there are wearable type air purification devise such as mask-type and necklace-type. And by introducing the air purification system and IoT that I mentioned earlier, a large amount of data such as the air pollute time and the air pollute place that can get from all air purification systems.

By collecting the air pollute data from all of air purification IoT and  unite the ground data and satellite data to assist the resolution of satellites such as GCOM-C. It can be used to obtain precise air pollution data and maps and to verify the accuracy of satellites.

In addition, sharing information for the IoT air purification, it would be possible to create a system that could avoid environmental factors so as to prevent the onset and exacerbation of asthma.

I thought about purifying the earth's air as much as possible. I thought about installing the air purification system, which I talked about at the beginning, outside the vehicle which attached to the place where airflow of the vehicle can be smooth. The power required for all vehicles was the use of solar panels and the rotation of tires for vehicles to generate electricity , wind power generation by propellers or air currents for airplanes, and water flow for ships to supplement equipment power to generate electricity for IoT air purificaion. There are a lot of airplanes, cars, and ships traffic all over the world, so I thought to make all of them into an air purification system. We also thought that the accuracy of information could be improved by adding a monitor to measure the air quality.

Additionally, I thought that the human mind of competitiveness into these air purification systems.

People are competitive creatures, so I thought about a system to rank the people who contributed most to the purification of the earth's air every day, every week, and every year.

By equipping the wearable type, facility or vehicle or drone installation type, or installation type outside the vehicle with the air purifier described at the beginning, not only the air purification of the equipment range but also ,long-term I thought ,it would lead to purification of the air on the earth.

In addition, I thought that this method could be used for weightlessness with catalysts and air filters, and with humans for space exploration on the Moon and Mars if alcohol liquid is used there.



How I Developed This Project

I thought about how to make it more virus-safe than existing air purifiers.

I used the open data of air pollution prediction as the data of the space agency to link it with the IoT air purifier.

I didn't have any technology or materials, so I was full of 3D data.

But, finally, I finished my project.
