Purify the Air Supply

Has your time spent indoors increased during the COVID-19 pandemic as a result of stay-at-home and shelter-in-place policies worldwide? Your challenge is to use the International Space Station (ISS) as inspiration and develop a system to monitor and/or purify indoor air. It is entirely up to you whether the system you design is able to be used on Earth (for example in homes, businesses, transportation, etc.) and/or in space.

AirCup

Summary

AirCup is an innovative indoor air purifier that use three filters to purify the air in your home. AirCup use Cyclonic Techology to capture more possible air. The filters are entirely developed by our team inspired by International Space Station and the her magnific engineering.

How We Addressed This Challenge

Our project, AirCup, answers perfectly to the challenge “Purify the Air Supply”. How?

AirCup can be used indoor for every kind of environment like houses, offices, museums and other public places. It works by recycling the air through titanium dioxide filters and sanitizes with UV lamps. It can destroy air pollution and all organic pollutants, including viruses, bacteria.

Our Solution is better than the other thanks to the efficency, design and prize.

How We Developed This Project

The AirCup project born from a need of our territory.

Our territory, in the southern Italy, is very polluted and AirCup solve this problem also in this emergency period due to the pandemic crisis.

We approached the challenge with a lot of motivation, as we can make an important contribution to our local territory, but above all for the global community. In developing our idea, we tried to make the best use of data provided by NASA and ESA, in particular, we focused on the data of the biological filter used on the ISS and how it solved the problems of recycling air in the spacecraft, since it is a closed place.

In the development phase we implemented a 25l/second fan, Arduino, led strips, optical fibers, uv source 264 nm, AC / DC transformer, and we programmed the software with the Arduino programming language and finally to create the 3D model of the prototype we used Autocad, Inventor including Premiere Pro for the 30 seconds-video.

One of the difficulties the team had was trying to find a single solution for all needs. Precisely for this reason, the price of AirCup is lower than the competitors, its cost is around 99$.

AirCup, with his modern and elegant design, purifies the air in a 5mx7m room, in just 35 minutes, using a revolutionary titanium dioxide filter, the same one used in the ISS.
