Purify the Air Supply

Has your time spent indoors increased during the COVID-19 pandemic as a result of stay-at-home and shelter-in-place policies worldwide? Your challenge is to use the International Space Station (ISS) as inspiration and develop a system to monitor and/or purify indoor air. It is entirely up to you whether the system you design is able to be used on Earth (for example in homes, businesses, transportation, etc.) and/or in space.

TranspAir- the future of air

Summary

Our project is to purify the air in public transport. First, the polluted air enters and passes through an intercooler connected to the engine, heating the air and killing most of the pathogens. After that, the hot air passes through a second intercooler and is cooled. Now, the air passes through a tube with high levels of ultraviolet radiation, killing the remaining pathogens, and after that, it passes through a plate of titanium dioxide, which retains the larger particles.

How We Addressed This Challenge

We are 13/14 years teenagers, and we are concerned about how nature and people's health is important. This challenge made us think about a solution for both these things we worry about. Here in Brazil, COVID-19 killed about 30.000 people and mostly of our population can't stay safe at home. They are exposed to many risks, feeling insecure of being contaminated or contaminating someone they love, but they keep working to save our country and save themselves. With this in mind, we can not just wait something good happen, we need to make it happen. We offer a solution for the safety of the workers. Public transportation cause a lot of contamination, because it's very crowded and badly ventilated most times. Our project will make them feel comfortable while using the bus. We are doing our part to help the World. The future is changing, the future is coming. Everything we do today changes the tomorrow. Are you prepared?

How We Developed This Project

Our main idea was purified air in hospitals using the ISS system (UV plus TiO²), but we realized that this idea was very expensive and had no innovation, so we decided to change, this time adapting the system to the public transportation, but the idea was simple and very similar to the ISS system, but then we found the main idea, use the heat emitted from the engines' fuel to overheat the air that would be sucked from inside the bus this would be done by two intercoolers one with the objective of overheating (killing the COVID-19), plus an intercooler with the intention of cooling the air, and then by a filtering system (TiO² plus UV) the air would return by bus.

This way we would be improving the quality of life, work, laser... of low-income people, that inspired so much 50% of our group, because they live in this condition, and being part of a project that gives to them better study conditions.

This is it in short, our focus is to encourage young people to change their futures and improve the living conditions of people without conditions through technological, effective and economical means! The challenge is to purify the air on public transportation. Our solution was adapting the system of ISS's ethylene withdrawal for the extermination of pathogens inside the bus. The project is important because most part of people in Brazil and other countries use this kind of transportation, crowded and without ventilation, where any disease spreads easily. We offer a solution to solve this problem.
