Purify the Air Supply

Has your time spent indoors increased during the COVID-19 pandemic as a result of stay-at-home and shelter-in-place policies worldwide? Your challenge is to use the International Space Station (ISS) as inspiration and develop a system to monitor and/or purify indoor air. It is entirely up to you whether the system you design is able to be used on Earth (for example in homes, businesses, transportation, etc.) and/or in space.

Home air purification within plants existence from ethylene, pathogens, bacteria, and viruses

Summary

During the quarantine. Our duty began to provide home good life quality. The pollutants of air are growing, which causes asthma, allergies, and sinuses.Cultivated plants are one of the SDG which can be achieved from home. The only problem is that plants produce ethylene which the accumulated ratio of it can be an issue. The project is working on the base of filtering the air from pathogens, bacteria, and viruses besides converting the ethylene to (CO2) and water that can be recycled to grow plants.

How We Addressed This Challenge

At the COVID-19 quarantine, the time that people spend at their home increases. The problem is that most people don’t know that indoor air quality is important as well as the outdoor air quality to support human health. Also, at these while, air pollution decreased as most of the pollutants like fossil fuel, car exhaust, and factories are not as much as before in the air. So, we need to keep the air pollutions reduced when life and factories are back to work again. Developing a system combining the scrubber UV with the Airocide. "Airocide" can capture particles smaller than dust—like viruses, bacteria, and volatile organic compounds. “scrubber" air is moved into tubes coated with thin layers of titanium dioxide (TiO2). When an ultraviolet (UV) light source located in the tubes strikes the TiO2, the ethylene gets converted to water and carbon dioxide, both of which are beneficial for plants” ("Home air purifiers eradicate harmful pathogens"). this project will improve the quality of air for people who suffers from asthma, allergies, and sinuses as well helping provide SDG for growing plants.

How We Developed This Project

Since COVID 19 has appeared, the economic activity has been stopped nearly and in result, the environment pollution has been decreasing day after a day as many regions experience a drop in air pollution and we can see that seas and oceans became very pure and clean in addition to the ozone layer that now has been closed and healed. But, after ending the pandemic everything will return as it was, such that the industry and manufacturing will start and this will cause air pollution again. So, this what inspired our team to choose this challenge. So, our team begins to search for new ideas that help in purifying the air and keeping it clean. And we choose Airocide as the project that we are going to develop because it is the only air purifier that completely destroys airborne bacteria, mold, fungi, mycotoxins, viruses, volatile organic compounds, and odors. and the product can use in a variety of settings. And because of Airocide’s powerful germ-killing properties as it purges the air of harmful bacteria like methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus. And we are going to develop it by combining it with other device called “scrubber,” air is drawn into tubes coated with thin layers of titanium dioxide (TiO2). When an ultraviolet (UV) light source located in the tubes strikes the TiO2, the ethylene gets converted to water and carbon dioxide, both of which are beneficial for plants. And this will lead to an increase in the efficiency of the project and get air healthier and cleaner. And through working on our project we had many troubles as at first the challenge wasn’t defined clearly but we solve this problem after making many discussions between us and asking on the lunch chat and also, we had made many achievements as learning about different air purifying system, ways of surviving in space and many other information and skills
