Purify the Air Supply

Has your time spent indoors increased during the COVID-19 pandemic as a result of stay-at-home and shelter-in-place policies worldwide? Your challenge is to use the International Space Station (ISS) as inspiration and develop a system to monitor and/or purify indoor air. It is entirely up to you whether the system you design is able to be used on Earth (for example in homes, businesses, transportation, etc.) and/or in space.

Purify - The Clean Air Solution

Summary

Our project uses UV light, catalytic conversion and carbon scrubbing to remove the 3 major unwanted components in the air - pathogens, Carbon Monoxide and Carbon Dioxide.

How We Addressed This Challenge

We designed a system that can be installed anywhere that uses a number of stages to remove pathogens, CO and CO2 from indoor air. Our project utilizes UV light, catalytic conversion and carbon scrubbing.

How We Developed This Project

We were inspired by the current Covid-19 pandemic to improve air quality inside public transport or any indoor space. We used our knowledge of chemistry and modern day approaches to filtering unwanted components out of the air to design our solution. We used the life support systems on the ISS as inspiration, Our greatest achievement was learning to work effectively as a team.
