Purify the Air Supply

Has your time spent indoors increased during the COVID-19 pandemic as a result of stay-at-home and shelter-in-place policies worldwide? Your challenge is to use the International Space Station (ISS) as inspiration and develop a system to monitor and/or purify indoor air. It is entirely up to you whether the system you design is able to be used on Earth (for example in homes, businesses, transportation, etc.) and/or in space.

Respire_x

Summary

Respire_x is an indoor air purification system, which exchanges air from the external and internal environment. However, during this exchange there is filtering / sterilization through catalytic oxidation by ultraviolet light and possible use of a sensor to detect covid-19. In addition to this process, there is the sterilization mechanism at the entrance through a chamber using sodium hypochlorite and 70% alcohol, according to what will be sterilized and body temperature reading automatically wi

How We Addressed This Challenge

Respire_x is structured in 2 layers: the indoor air purifier and the disinfection / sterilization mechanism for entering this environment. Both systems are described in the following link: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1fXvh3nJaafpmA9HBHiik68pgu4C6MIO-ASsMRbptMg4/edit?usp=sharing

How We Developed This Project

Since the zero moment when we chose to purify the air as a challenge, we feel called by the need to implement something different that contributes to society. Motivated to choose this challenge because air or, more directly, oxygen is one of the main components (if not the most important) for human life and that needs special care to ensure the preservation of human life as we know it and improving it -over there. To develop the project, we focus as a team in crowded places, where the flow of people is constant and it is necessary fresh and fresh air to keep the place in great condition and even more for the health of the people who frequent these places constantly. For this, we use the data from the space agency based on the largest components present in the air, according to the studies of the different satellites and the tasks they perform, reaching a conclusion that obviously the human being as a society needs to adjust many industrial processes of appropriate way, but going further, we can see that in a specific or reduced society that decreases every day, the most necessary thing is to purify the air of pathogens and the different types of pollution present in it.  To carry out the project, we mainly use hardware-based tools combined slightly with the programmable air conditioning software, adding a little bit of chemistry to the process when implementing titanium catalysis to purify the air. When developing the idea, the main difficulties we encountered was based on how to carry out air purification and also the proper disinfection of people, without threatening their lives, but, thanks to the different studies carried out over the years, we were able to determine an ideal strategy to achieve a more solid solution.
