Purify the Air Supply

Has your time spent indoors increased during the COVID-19 pandemic as a result of stay-at-home and shelter-in-place policies worldwide? Your challenge is to use the International Space Station (ISS) as inspiration and develop a system to monitor and/or purify indoor air. It is entirely up to you whether the system you design is able to be used on Earth (for example in homes, businesses, transportation, etc.) and/or in space.

Summary

Our mission is to help health professionals to breath a clean air in this delicate moment, because they are more exposed to the vírus than the other people, our solution is based on diving masks that has an electric filter, that uses potok technology made by a russian company teamed up with nasa. This filter starts to work when the contaminated air passes through it, the virus and bacteria will suffer eletroporation, which means that it will inactivate it by giving "shocks" in this organisms, after that the air will go through more filters to clean other organisms. The solution includes compress this system so that can be embedded in the mask.

How We Addressed This Challenge

Our project can fit in this challenge because it solves one of the problems of air purification for people that have very important roles in this pandemic and who need attention, an example of this problem is that here in Brazil, we are the first in the world with more nurses deaths (data from the beginning of May), our solution is able to help solving the problem. In addition, we use space technology to help people on earth.

How We Developed This Project

We’ve tried to think about the main actual problems about air, we have notice that health professionals are very exposed to microorganisms that are bad for health.

We analyze a lot of purification systems made by space agencies ou used by them, we liked the Potok 150-M-01 system, it uses directly physical and biological processes, effectively.

The main problem that we had it was to think about the prototype construction and how to use potok technology, but we solved this problem by using the technology embedded in the diving masks.
