Purify the Air Supply

Has your time spent indoors increased during the COVID-19 pandemic as a result of stay-at-home and shelter-in-place policies worldwide? Your challenge is to use the International Space Station (ISS) as inspiration and develop a system to monitor and/or purify indoor air. It is entirely up to you whether the system you design is able to be used on Earth (for example in homes, businesses, transportation, etc.) and/or in space.

Plants = Air

Summary

NASA already has the research done, plants purify the air, now we need to sell it to the masses.

How I Addressed This Challenge

In 1989 NASA proved in door plants purify the air, but too many plants inside isn’t exactly cool. I designed a plan to sell this idea to everypne, to make indoor plants sexy, easy, and the new home style.  If you follow the instructions there is no need to monitor the air, just water the plants and place them correctly to ensure the plants do the work they were made to do.

How I Developed This Project

My son is a brain cancer survivor.  We don’t really know what caused the cancer, but a parents always wonders ”why” and ”how”.  Having a clean, safe home is important to me.  I see cancer warnings on products and cringe.  I knew plants where good for the home air and happened to see this project online.  I started researching what we already knew about plants and their ability to clean the air.  It seems simple, and makes sense.  NASA proved pants are good for us, but take time to watch the latest home design shows or read the magazines or blogs and plants are always a second thought, maybe one or two for an accent.  No one ever discusses how they clean the air, how they can play an important role in keeping our homes healthy.  We can change that, we can market it to the people.  Teach them how house plants are great for our air, COVID gave us the perfect market for that, at the same time teach people how to care of the plants and where to place them.

Get a good PR person or marketing team, creat a communication plan.  Find a few private companies to create cool products to support the plan and then go and do.

Project Demo

The solution depends on a solid communication plan.

Measurement for success: Indoor plant use will increase by 50% in the first year, tracking would depend upon partnering with large home stores for the data.

Secondary measurement: Use of indoor plants in home shows and talking about them on social media will increase by 65% in the first year.

Message: https://ntrs.nasa.gov/search.jsp?R=19930073077 - leaves, roots, soil, and associated microorganisms of plants reduce indoor air pollutants

Social Meade: #CleanAirPlants #PlantIt #PlantHouse #NASAair

Tactics:

Stage 1: Partner with companies in the community who will benefit, large home stores, garden centers, etc. We will need their initial selling numbers for house plants to measure our success.

Stage 2: Take the research and create multiple, easy to digest, graphics about the benefit of indoor plants.  They should be simple and include photos.  It can’t be complicated like this graphic (https://lifehacker.com/this-graphic-shows-the-best-air-cleaning-plants-accord-1705307836).  Focus on the best plants, the provide the best solution, with the easiest maintainability.

Share the message, social media, media release, NASA talk to the experts YouTube videos, ask the experts on Twitter, etc.

Stage 3: Engage home shows on TV, house keeping magazines and blogs, provide interviews with experts, and how-to videos to support the message

Completion: This is the plan for the first year, we’d want to develope another plan for year two, once the first year is complete.  That plan‘s approach would be based on the success of the first plan.
