Purify the Air Supply

Has your time spent indoors increased during the COVID-19 pandemic as a result of stay-at-home and shelter-in-place policies worldwide? Your challenge is to use the International Space Station (ISS) as inspiration and develop a system to monitor and/or purify indoor air. It is entirely up to you whether the system you design is able to be used on Earth (for example in homes, businesses, transportation, etc.) and/or in space.

Summary

The system called SkyAir allows you to monitor and purify the air from any indoor environment using a site, which also alerts the user to the air quality in your region, which may affect the indoor air quality. The monitoring device is based on nanoparticle application technologies for the detection of Covid-19 and the use of MEMS sensors to monitor the composition of air in the environment. In the purifier, pollutants are collected and concentrated in an ionization chamber, in which the treatment of air quality is carried out using UV-C technology to eliminate air contaminants.

How We Addressed This Challenge

Our system addresses the issue of monitoring indoor air and aims to improve its quality, acting on the elimination of harmful elements, impacting common environments and for private use, and presenting the relationship between the quality of outdoor air with the indoor one. It is also creative and innovative because it uses UV-C light technology for the purification process, in addition to the MEMS sensors (with fluorescence spectrometry techniques). The solution is based on scientific studies already developed with favorable results, and is a relevant project, acting as an agent to combat Covid-19. It can be used on land, in companies, shopping malls, and it can also be used in space, as it is adaptable to the place of use.

How We Developed This Project

Our team chose this challenge given the current situation in world and because its problem has persisted for generations. When analyzing the challenge several times we understand the need to develop a solution that monitors the ambient air and purifies it. We saw the outdoor environment affected that indoor air, leading to the decision to use the Meteomatics API and the AWS integration with NASA to inform users when the outdoor environment is contaminated. For the development of the site we use Node.js and React Native; for prototyping 3D models, we use Solidworks. We had difficulties in the ideation process and to develop a project that was innovative and had a global impact. During the development of the project, we saw that another problem was the feasibility of it, and after many researches, we found a solution to the problems encountered, in addition to a system that performed both the monitoring of the internal environment and the air purification, ensuring a good result for the user.
