Purify the Air Supply

Has your time spent indoors increased during the COVID-19 pandemic as a result of stay-at-home and shelter-in-place policies worldwide? Your challenge is to use the International Space Station (ISS) as inspiration and develop a system to monitor and/or purify indoor air. It is entirely up to you whether the system you design is able to be used on Earth (for example in homes, businesses, transportation, etc.) and/or in space.

Summary

We will use the power of Nano-Technology to develop and improve the air condition system in the earth and the international space station. We will add two different layers of paint on the air conditioners that will clean the air and help reduce the COVID-19's spread or even stop it.

How We Addressed This Challenge

One of the challenges is to purify the air supplies and after the researches we decided that we will work on something that is shared between both the earth and the space. As this project will give these air supplies the ability to filter the air and clean it using nano technology .

How We Developed This Project

Air conditioners are usually made of any random material that are just enough to make it work, but we developed this by using specific materials that will have a significant effect on the virus and destroy the virus. I was inspired by the international space station and how the astronauts manage to live there with their own ways of getting oxygen and pure air. We have also used many of Nasa's websites which had essays about using nano-technology to solve some of the major problems that many people were struggling with. Also, some of the essays were talking about the AC system in the ISS which helped us to build our ideas. we faced some problems about the design of the AC and that it could vary from a place to another, for example, the AC's in the factories, hospitals, home or ISS. we managed to find 2 materials that could make a huge difference with a possibility of stopping the virus.

Project Demo

The air-conditioners will be painted by two types of materials. First material will be Silver (AG) which will be around 5 nano meter. If the Silver reaches this size, the surface will be decreased which will make the material chemically active that will be able to destroy the bacteria, fungi and viruses.It is worth to be mentioned that this material have a history of curing the SARS virus which is one of the family that related to the Corona virus, that means there is a high chance of stopping the corona virus.

The second material will be titanium dioxide (TiO2) in nano scale.This material is chemically active and stable, it is also cheap in price. TiO2 is a environmentally friendly but the main reason that we want to make it our paint in this project is that, if it is exposed to the UV-Rays, it will absorbs it and produce oxygen atoms. If it receive this power from the rays, the electrons in this compound which are in the valance band will use this power to switch from the valance band to the conduct band. it will create a gab with a positive charge, and that means a we will receive an oxidised  area which can resolve the get rid of the organic pollutants.


In conclusion, we will paint the AC with these 2 materials to double the benefits and stop the COVID-19  from spreading and also have a clean air. another benefit is that it will decrease the harmful effects from the UV-Rays on the astronaut.
