Purify the Air Supply

Has your time spent indoors increased during the COVID-19 pandemic as a result of stay-at-home and shelter-in-place policies worldwide? Your challenge is to use the International Space Station (ISS) as inspiration and develop a system to monitor and/or purify indoor air. It is entirely up to you whether the system you design is able to be used on Earth (for example in homes, businesses, transportation, etc.) and/or in space.

The Way To A Better Future

Summary

The air purifier created by me is a working model which really purifies air. It consists of three parts including the fan, coconut as the carbon filter (burnt coconut peel) and a layer of cotton. Carbon filter attracts the polluted air towards it and cotton absorbs the dust particles. The fan helps in sending back the clean and purified air through some small holes. It's a purely self-made model and can be used to make the air quality better.

How I Addressed This Challenge

This project addresses this challenge as the air is getting purified through an air purifier which is a really useful thing for us and our mother Earth.

How I Developed This Project

What inspired me to chose this challenge was that the air pollution level has increased a lot in the last few years and air purifiers are considered to be an important invention for all the people. Also, as this model had to be purely self-made, I took help from the official website of NASA which helped me choose the resources and make my purifier useful and much more better. The most problems faced by me were while making the design of the model. Designing the model was a great achievement for me. Also, ISS (International Space Station) was a great inspiration for me. The ISS is the largest structure created by humans which is sent to the space. It really inspired me to make my air purifier.

Data & Resources

The resources used in my project were a fan which is working through a motor, peels of a coconut which are replaced by a carbon filter (as it attracts dust towards it when burnt) and a layer of cotton which absorbs dust particles in it. I took help from the official website of NASA which helped me think and choose all the resources required in this project. NASA is one of the greatest space agencies known all over the world and the NASA app, their official website and their social media pages are very useful as they provide us with many information. I really appreciate all these steps taken by the NASA team.
