Quiet Planet

The COVID-19 outbreak and the resulting social distancing recommendations and related restrictions have led to numerous short-term changes in economic and social activity around the world, all of which may have impacts on our environment. Your challenge is to use space-based data to document the local to global environmental changes caused by COVID-19 and the associated societal responses.

Summary

Our challenge is to find solutions for the incorrect disposal of waste. When in decomposition, this waste causes an increase in the production of harmful gases to the environment, such as carbon dioxide, causing health problems to people and animals, as well as negatively affecting the greenhouse effect. Our platform uses gamification techniques to motivate selective collection, connect cooperatives to people, in addition to teaching how simple the recycling process can be and encouraging them through rewards. The collection is carried out in the user’s homes avoiding people to leave their house. Likewise to the environmental impact, we are stimulating income generation.

How We Addressed This Challenge

Our challenge is Quiet Planet and our project fits this proposal because we present the solution to reduce the environmental impacts caused by garbage that is incorrectly disposed of. We created an application that connects the cooperatives for the collection of recycled garbage. With Covid-19 the collection of recyclable waste such as plastic, paper and aluminum was suspended in some places like Brazil. As a result, recycled waste was mixed with ordinary waste, contributing to the increase in the emission of polluting gases into the atmosphere, directly influencing the greenhouse effect. Our app connects people to recycling cooperatives that collect this waste, avoiding disposal in ordinary garbage and consequently reducing greenhouse gases.

How We Developed This Project

Through NASA data, we have identified an increase in the emission of gases like methane, carbon dioxide. They have a negative influence on the greenhouse effect. Moreover, we have used data from the UN that shows an increase in the production of waste and also from Brazilian agencies which also indicates this growth. Failure to properly dispose of garbage can influence air pollution, causing problems not only to the environment, but also to people and animals. Therefore, our inspiration is to find a way to encourage actions of separation and selective collection, as well as promoting income generation for families.
