Quiet Planet

The COVID-19 outbreak and the resulting social distancing recommendations and related restrictions have led to numerous short-term changes in economic and social activity around the world, all of which may have impacts on our environment. Your challenge is to use space-based data to document the local to global environmental changes caused by COVID-19 and the associated societal responses.

ECO-19

Summary

We are developing an application that’s meant to lighten up people's days through these hard times. It contains a section for animated videos and short articles, each one delivering a piece of information in a simplified way. There is also a section for activities and recycling ideas to do at home that relate to Earth issues. There are points for each finished part, which can be transformed into donations later. It also sends regular notifications with positive messages and encouragement quotes.

How We Addressed This Challenge

Our lives according to the circumstances of the pandemic became much quieter than it used to be, so using information from NASA, ESA, and JAXA we developed an app to make people enjoy their quarantine by reviewing the positive side of a quiet planet by opening eyes to the local to global environmental changes caused by COVID-19 and its social distancing consequences.

How We Developed This Project

With all the negative and depressing news we see now, it’s hard to see the positive side. This challenge is the perfect way to deliver positive news about how COVID-19 was a major reason in Earth’s quick recovery. We planned to develop a simple app with up to date information about how Earth and wildlife are improving. Throughout the developing process we thought of adding some fun activities that will not only help the environment but also boost your creativity and help get rid of quarantine boredom.

The data given by NASA was simplified and used in the animation videos as well as detailed articles if you’d like to know more about a certain topic.

A lot of apps were used to help us create the end result; Plotagon, Toontastic, and Adobe Premiere Pro were used to create the animation videos. And for the designing process we used Microsoft PowerPoint, Paint and PNG tool.

The biggest problem we faced while creating the app was the animation videos. We didn't know where to start or if we needed professional help, but afterwards we found apps that were easy to use. It was challenging for us to create screens that showed how the app would look like, but with some creativity and designing skills we managed to make them in a way that showed our app clearly.
