Quiet Planet

The COVID-19 outbreak and the resulting social distancing recommendations and related restrictions have led to numerous short-term changes in economic and social activity around the world, all of which may have impacts on our environment. Your challenge is to use space-based data to document the local to global environmental changes caused by COVID-19 and the associated societal responses.

Quiet Planet

Summary

The app is an application focused on spreading information about the ecosystem, designed to both give voice to experts and help raise awareness of the environment for those who would otherwise not have access to that information. It’s a social media with a UI inspired by apps like Facebook, the user can post and engage with articles centered on nature and healthy lifestyles, that rewards articles with credible information through the Starlikes (This app version of “Upvotes”) by displacing the best reviewed articles in the homepage. The app also allows engagement through the follow system, where the user can follow a specific author to have more of their work displayed in the user’s feed.

How We Addressed This Challenge

Projeto:

  1. The main objective of our project is to inform and educate the laity and the academic sector about the environment and the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, there will be information on the risk of contamination by other diseases where the individual is located. In it, the influence of the virus on nature and people's lives is emphasized, an evident example is the decrease in the emission of carbon dioxide and the constant recovery of the ozone layer. In addition, water channels polluted by the presence of man have returned to a crystalline appearance, as seen in Venice, Italy. Despite disrupting human traffic, the world can restructure itself. This is the focus of the application: to show the influence of the virus in our world.
How We Developed This Project

The impact of the pandemic on our lives has been profound. Our lives have changed dramatically and we ask ourselves, "How does this interfere with the environment?", "How can we stay informed if there is so much false news?" Thinking about these issues and facing the challenge of fighting false news, we realize how the role of science influences the preservation of life. We developed this application so that people can take better care of themselves, know in what conditions the environment in which they find themselves and what risks they run because they are contaminated. We care about the environment and understand that our tragedy has become a relief for all fauna and flora. So, when everything comes back, we want to be more aware, more prepared to face a new reality. Our air is cleaner, our waters more crystal clear, but what about our perspective? Direct source information, no problems. This is our solution. Our group used the tools of Word, SAi2 (for the design of the home page), photoshop (for the home page), Reaper (my friend used to make the music). In addition, we also use spatial data to enrich the project completely and dynamically. And, finally, the group encountered problems, initially in communication and then some related to the connection of the topics covered, however, with the progress of the project, these doubts were replaced by ideas and very productive answers.
