SDGs and COVID-19

This challenge invites you to analyze the impact of COVID-19 on the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by looking at the current and ongoing change in the monitoring indicators of the UN SDGs using Earth observation/remote sensing and global Earth system model-derived analysis products.

Old River Chico

Summary

In order to support the state and government agencies in targeting the destination of public areas of river sanitation and treatment, we develop the Old River Chico, a website to inform where the problem is maximized according to a rank of urgency using satellites to observe abnormal levels of microorganisms , which are indicators of organic matter, generated by the release of sewage and its derivatives. The use of NASA Worldview and IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistic) database are used to monitor the focus microorganism region. The NASA Worldview are topography responsable and IBGE giving the statistic data.

How We Addressed This Challenge

According the sustainable development goals 6, regarding the current pandemic, people without access the potable water and basic sanitation are more fragile and exposed to Sars-CoV-2 outbreak, have difficult to fight contagion and follow prevention recommendations established by health agencies. With the Old River Chico project, the government institutions will have an overview of which regions need more attention and investment in basic sanitation, therefore, this facilitates the follow up of recommendation than sanitary prevention to combat the virus.

Getting suitable treatment, the danger areas will maximize actions from achieve the goal 3.9 (until 2030, reduce substantially the number of deaths and sickness caused by dangerous chemicals, pollution and contamination of air, to water and to ground) referent the ODS 3 (Health and Welfare). Soon, reducing substantially the number of deaths and sickness provoked through the pollution and contamination of water, as, for example, Poliovírus, Echovírus, Hepatitis A, Rotavírus, Hepatitis E and Adenovírus. Thus, the Old River Chico utilization it is necessary because, after improving of basic sanitation in the localities, rivers and seas will not spread the sickness mentioned.

How We Developed This Project

We developed our project thinking about the main problem that has been affecting the world, which is the lack of basic sanitation and the thousands of lives lost due to the absence of something essential for human life, for example the lack of basic sanitation potentiates several diseases such as cholera , and according to the WHO (world health organization) the deaths caused by cholera are equivalent to the deaths caused by AIDS and 84% of the deaths are children under 5 years old, in addition the consequences of the lack of basic sanitation is one of the biggest causes of preventable deaths in the world. We use organizational methods like crazy 8 brainstorm and simple situation analysis to

brainstorm and analysis of simple situations to inspire as shown on channels like Earth Minute, and we arrived at our project. It deals with an application that measures light reflection and analyzes data from hyperspectral images captured by satellites very similar to those used by NASA and other agencies to monitor other activities. Through these data, collect various information such as places with a high concentration of microorganisms in water and in the organic mass generated by them. You can view outbreaks of many diseases like cholera, or access this serious monitoring released to the people and sponsored by the government, through the application developed by our team with a simple click on your area of territorial interest that you can know if the risk of contracting some diseases or the application also provides data such as the level of coli and coliforms in the water. The government can use this application to find out how to better target or due to the capital to implement projects to meet this basic need of the people.

We use oracle tools to help us analyze our data, we use Oracle analytics to analyze our data and we start using oracle Apex to prototype our app. We had some problems to start our projects, due to the fact that our team is not experienced in the area of data analysis and development. We ended up not having the best performance possible in creating our app, but we certainly gained priceless knowledge by prototyping it.

Data & Resources

NASA Worldview, together with IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics), was extremely important because we used it to visualize the Demographic Density of the regions selected for application of the project. Consequently, there was a correlation of this data with Google Earth, for an accuracy in the locations chosen by the users of the platform.

The data on the number of cases and deaths of Sars-CoV-2 from John Hopkins University were related to the World Health Organization data, where research shows that the lack of basic sanitation is a driver of the virus of the current global pandemic because groups of a society that does not have basic sanitation has a tendency to acquire it more easily..In addition, the use of hyperspectral images through space agency satellites will be used for the verification of microorganisms in rivers, seas and sewers

We use scientific articles to validate our idea, many taken from the PubMed platform. Several topics were analyzed, one that our team considered important was the use of Remote Sensing for the Detection of Vibrio Cholera by Indirect Measurement and articles explaining the technology of analysis of hyperspectral images.
